Lucknow Super Giants staged a predictable yet shocking move ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction. As anticipated by the fans, LSG did not retain their skipper, KL Rahul for the next edition of the league. The franchise retained five players for IPL 2025 but Rahul did not find a place among them.  After three seasons in the league, where Rahul led the franchise into the playoffs, the management, owned by Sanjeev Goenka, released the seasoned Indian. Now, Rahul, who has previously led Punjab Kings, is out to find a new franchise in the league. Whereas, LSG is likely to go with Nicholas Pooran as their captain for IPL 2025.

After letting KL Rahul go, LSG retained West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran for a whopping 21 crore as their first-choice pick. Despite the huge amount alllotted to Pooran, Lucknow didn't shy away from using 5 retention slabs. Lucknow Super Giants, furthermore, retained spinner Ravi Bishnoi and seamer Mayank Yadav for 11 crore each. Moreover, the team used the uncapped player criteria to keep pacer Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni in the squad for 4 crore each. Splurging a total of 51 crore on retentions, LSG will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction with 69 crore and 1 RTM card left in their purse.
