Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has responded to recent reports claiming that the franchise had earmarked INR 50 crore to acquire legendary cricketer Rohit Sharma. Sharma, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup in June, announced his retirement from international T20 cricket but will continue to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite his ongoing IPL career, Sharma faced significant changes last year when he was replaced as captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) by Hardik Pandya. This decision sparked widespread backlash from fans, who criticized MI's management for the move. There were also reports suggesting that Sharma was unhappy with his treatment at the franchise.
Goenka's comments come amid speculation about Sharma's future in the league and potential interest from other franchises. While Sharma’s exit from international T20s marked the end of an era, his impact on the IPL continues to be a major talking point. The LSG’s rumored interest in Sharma underscores the ongoing fascination with his career and the high value placed on his cricketing prowess. As the IPL season approaches, Sharma’s next move remains a subject of intense anticipation and speculation among fans and cricketing circles alike.
Recent reports have hinted that Rohit Sharma, the five-time IPL-winning captain, might be released before the upcoming mega auction. Should he enter the auction pool, his name could ignite a bidding war among franchises. However, Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has addressed these rumors, explaining why setting aside INR 50 crore for Sharma may not be a practical strategy. On August 28, LSG announced the appointment of Zaheer Khan as their new mentor. This move follows a challenging season for the Super Giants, who, after reaching the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, finished seventh last season with seven wins and as many losses from 14 matches. Zaheer Khan will work alongside head coach Justin Langer to steer the team towards its first IPL title.
The inclusion of Zaheer Khan aims to bolster the team’s performance and bring a fresh perspective as they prepare for the next season. With a strong coaching setup and strategic adjustments, LSG hopes to improve upon their previous performances and establish themselves as serious contenders in the IPL. The collaboration between Zaheer and Langer is expected to enhance the team’s prospects and create a more competitive edge in the league.
“Do you even know if Rohit Sharma is entering the auction? This is all unnecessary. It all depends on whether Mumbai Indians release Rohit Sharma or not. And even if Rohit comes to auction... if you put 50 per cent of your purse on one player, how will you buy other play?” Sanjiv Goenka said during an interview with SportsTak.“Everyone wishes to have the best captain and best players. It's not about wanting. It all depends on what you have, and what is available, and what all you can do with it. Everyone franchise will have the same desire," he added.
