Following his standout performance in the 2023 World Cup and three exceptional IPL seasons with the Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2021 to 2023, Glenn Maxwell's disappointing form in IPL 2024 has left many baffled. Despite his reputation for explosive batting and innovative strokeplay, Maxwell's display in the 17th edition of the IPL fell well below expectations. It marked his worst season in the league, managing just 52 runs across nine innings. In the crucial Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals on May 22, Maxwell had an opportunity to redeem himself. However, he faltered, carelessly spooning a catch to long-on off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin, compounding the misery for his team. Notably, Maxwell had previously enjoyed considerable success against Ashwin in the IPL, scoring 140 runs off 69 deliveries and being dismissed only twice before this encounter.

Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary, with 98 IPL matches to his credit, delivered a scathing critique of the Australian all-rounder. Following the clash between RR and RCB, Tiwary emphasized the critical situation of the match after Cameron Green's dismissal, stressing the importance of stabilizing the innings. Tiwary expressed bewilderment at Maxwell's contrasting performances in international cricket and the IPL, suggesting that Maxwell may lack the requisite focus and commitment, prioritizing financial gains and socializing over his cricketing duties.

“We have to come to Maxwell. It was a phase where a batter had to stay. You have so much of experience in international cricket - when you play for Australia, you perform so good. But as soon as you come to the IPL, I don't know what happens to him. It seems he has no interest. He doesn't care if he gets out, his bank balance is fine, the cheque will reach him, he will do get-togethers in the night, have a laugh, and get photos clicked,” said former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary during a recent interview.

Tiwary further reflected on the buzz generated after Royal Challengers Bangalore revived their faltering campaign with an impressive streak of six consecutive wins. While the team found solace in their improved performances towards the season's end, the absence of the coveted trophy left lingering questions. The mystery surrounding their inability to clinch the title remained unsolved, a conundrum yet to be deciphered by the astute minds within the franchise. Despite their late surge and the optimism it brought, the ultimate disappointment of falling short in the pursuit of championship glory lingered, casting a shadow over their otherwise commendable resurgence.

"What's the end result? You play to win. At the end of the day, they might be happy that they won six back-to-back matches to qualify, but the end result is the trophy, which isn't there. So, the problem is there,” added Tiwary.
