England’s star batter, Joe Root, is closing in on the legendary Test runs record held by former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Root is currently 3,544 runs away from surpassing Tendulkar's remarkable tally of 15,921 Test runs, achieved over the course of 200 Tests. In contrast, Root has amassed 12,377 runs in 145 Test matches to date. At just 33 years old, Root has a significant portion of his career still ahead of him, providing him ample opportunity to break Tendulkar’s record. His current form is exceptional, marked by a series of impressive centuries that highlight his continued dominance in Test cricket. Recently, Root’s two centuries against Sri Lanka have further demonstrated his ability to score big and narrow the gap between himself and Tendulkar’s record.
Given his consistent performance and the number of years he likely has left in his career, Root is well-positioned to challenge and potentially surpass Tendulkar's record. As he continues to accumulate runs and maintain his stellar form, the cricketing world is closely watching to see if Root can achieve this monumental milestone and etch his name alongside the greats of the game.
Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan is confident that Joe Root will eventually surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs. Vaughan speculates that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might not appreciate seeing a non-Indian at the top of the Test run-getters list, hinting at the high regard in which Tendulkar’s record is held.
Among the current generation of cricketers, few can come close to matching Root's pace or Tendulkar’s record. One notable player often mentioned in this context is Virat Kohli. Despite his remarkable career, Kohli is currently a considerable distance behind both Root and Tendulkar in terms of Test runs. Having played 113 Tests and scored 8,848 runs, Kohli still trails significantly when compared to Root’s tally of 12,377 runs and Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs. Kohli's impressive statistics and batting prowess make him a prominent figure in contemporary cricket, but he faces a considerable challenge if he aims to close the gap with Root and potentially challenge Tendulkar’s longstanding record. As Root continues to accumulate runs and Kohli strives to enhance his own record, the race to break Tendulkar’s record remains one of the most intriguing narratives in modern cricket.
"I think it's three and a half thousand runs he trails by. He has at least three years. Unless his back snaps, he is the most enthusiastic lover of the game. I don't think he is going to get away. He is no longer the captain and knows his game better than ever before. I'll be amazed if he doesn't. He has played beautifully,” former England captain Michael Vaughan was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times."Even if he goes on, I still think he will carry on. If Joe goes past Sachin, it will be the best thing that ever happens to cricket, because there's no way BCCI would want an England player at the top of the list. They'll want an Indian at the top so that will secure Test match cricket because it'll take forever for someone to get past him,” he added.
