With every next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), things are becoming really challenging for the bowlers to a great extent. In the ongoing IPL 2024 season, 200+ score has become a par total on majority of the grounds especially after the introduction of the much-debatable Impact Player Rule. However, some of the Indian as well as overseas bowlers have time and again proven their worth for their respective IPL franchises by picking up wickets at regular intervals. There have been a number of consistent performances by the bowlers in the history of a single IPL season. 1. Harshal Patel
While playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, right-arm pacer Harshal Patel looked in an amazing form with the ball during the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League. Despite conceding a total of 37 runs in a single over, he went on to finish with a superb tally of 32 wickets from as many as 15 matches. The IPL 2021 season was played in two phases where the first half of the tournament was hosted in India while the other half was played in the UAE. Harshal finished that season with an economy rate of 8.14 and an average of 14.34. He also became the first player to take a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians during the 2021 edition of the IPL. He is part of the list that includes bowlers with most wickets in IPL 2024.
2. Dwayne Bravo
Former Chennai Super Kings' pace bowling all-rounder Dwayne Bravo hold the joint first position in the list of highest wicket taker in IPL in a single season alongside Harshal Patel. The West Indian pacer claimed a total of 32 scalps from as many as 18 games during the 2013 season of the IPL. His impressive bowling performance helped the Chennai Super Kings qualify for the finals. While talking about his entire IPL career, Bravo is placed on the second position in the list of most wickets in IPL history having taken as many as 183 wickets from 161 games at an economy of 8.39.
3. Kagiso Rabada
The Delhi Capitals had their most remarkable season of the Indian Premier League history in 2020 where they qualified in the finals for the first time and right-arm speedster Kagiso Rabada was one of the biggest reasons for their success. The South African pace bowler ended up claiming the Purple Cap IPL having finished as the highest wicket taker in IPL 2020 season with a total of 30 wickets from 17 games. Rabada bowled really well throughout the Indian Premier League 2020 season which was hosted behind closed doors in the UAE. The Delhi Capitals fast bowler finished the tournament with a fine economy of 8.34 and an average of 18.26.
4. Lasith Malinga
It is very much hard to leave out Lasith Malinga while counting out the bowling records in the history of the Indian Premier League. The legendary Mumbai Indians fast bowler is one of the most consistent bowlers in the history of the T20 competition with his name always present in the IPL updates. He ended up taking an excellent tally of 28 wickets during the IPL 2011 season from as many as 16 games. Malinga finished the same edition of the competition with a mind-boggling economy of 5.95 and a bowling average of 13.39. While talking about his overall IPL career stats, he has picked up 170 wickets from 122 matches at an economy of 7.14.
5. James Faulkner
Australia's left-arm paceman James Faulkner is slotted at the fifth position in the list of most wickets in IPL during a single season as he finished with as many as 28 wickets in the 2013 season of the Indian Premier League. He completely dominated the proceedings with the ball during that year in the IPL, but still not ended up winning the Purple Cap as it was Dwayne Bravo who had the highest wickets in IPL 2013. Faulkner finished the competition with a brilliant economy of less than 7 and a bowling average of 15.25 from as many as 16 matches.
