The Mumbai Indians (MI) are all geared up to lock horns with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 67th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season starting on 17 May 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Incidentally, both these teams will be coming into this match after facing disappointing losses in their previous matches in the cash-rich league. Delhi Capitals picked up a fantastic 19-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants, while the hosts are coming into the game after losing their previous clash to Kolkata Knight Riders in their recent IPL 2024 outing. It is expected to be another exciting encounter at the business end of the IPL season.
Led by star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, MI is currently at the bottom of the table with 8 points from 13 matches. The Mumbai-based franchise will be highly disappointed with their performance in this edition. They were the first team to be officially eliminated in the IPL 2024 season. The five-time champions only managed to win four out of their 13 matches. In the batting department, Tilak Varma is the only other Mumbai batter who has consistently scored runs. The left-handed batter has scored 416 runs in 13 games, averaging 41.60 with a strike rate of 149.64.
Former MI captain Rohit Sharma had a solid start to the IPL 2024 season, but his performances have been very poor in the last few games. He has managed to score only 52 runs in the last six with four single-digit scores and a highest of 19 runs. Opener Ishan Kishan has struggled this season, while star batter Suryakumar Yadav has provided some key performances for MI fans. The middle-order batter has scored 345 runs from 10 games at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of 169.95. Jasprit Bumrah has been the standout performer for MI this season. Currently, he is the second-highest wicket-taker of the season, with 20 wickets in 13 matches. His economy rate is just 6.48.
On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants are coming into the game after losing three consecutive matches. They lost to Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals. With six wins and seven losses in 13 games, LSG stands in seventh place on the points table. LSG will look to finish the season on a high with a win against MI. Lucknow's top performer with the bat has been their captain, KL Rahul. Despite not being at his best, he has still managed to score 465 runs from 13 innings, boasting an average of 35.76 and a strike rate of 136.36.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran has performed outstandingly, scoring two half-centuries in 13 matches. He has accumulated 424 runs with an impressive average of 60.57 and a remarkable strike rate of 168.92. Yash Thakur and Naveen-ul-Haq have bowled well in patches, picking up 11 wickets from 10 matches and 12 wickets from nine games. Young leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi has not been at his best for Lucknow. Krunal Pandya has only managed to take five wickets from 13 matches but has been relatively economical, conceding runs at an average of 7.79 per over.
MI vs LSG IPL 2024: Mumbai Pitch Report
The Wankhede pitch is famous for its batting-friendly nature, especially during T20 games. The surface is typically flat, providing good bounce and carry, allowing batters to play their strokes freely. The dew plays a massive role in evening games, making things easy for the team batting second. However, there have been occasions when the pitch has assisted the bowlers, especially spinners, as the game progresses. Despite its reputation as a batter's paradise, the pitch occasionally favours bowlers, creating a balanced and thrilling contest between bat and ball. Mumbai recently witnessed a significant dust storm, and rain could interrupt the match between Mumbai and Lucknow. However, it should not spoil the game. The temperature is likely to be around 29 degrees, and according to AccuWeather, late-night thunderstorms are expected.
Predicted Mumbai Indians Playing XI
Mumbai Indians may consider providing opportunities to players in their squad who haven't had many chances this IPL season. However, MI is a team that takes immense pride in its performance. While a rotation policy could be adopted, Indian cricket fans will not see them lacking intensity on the field.
