Can the newest African boys, Uganda win their first T20 World Cup match against Papua New Guinea?
Papua New Guinea did not have the best of starts to their campaign for international glory, having lost their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 opener to the West Indies by five wickets. The match started with Papua New Guinea (PNG) batting first and scoring a total of 136 runs. Sese Bau contributed 50 runs for the team, supported by a 27-run knock from Kiplin Doriga. In the second half, the PNG bowlers could not contain the West Indies' attack as Roston Chase remained unbeaten on 42, securing an easy win for the two-time winners. Assad Vala delivered an outstanding bowling performance for PNG, taking 2 wickets for 28 runs. They aim to bounce back in the group stage by defeating Uganda in their next match.
Uganda had a tough start to their campaign, suffering a 125-run loss to Afghanistan. While chasing a total of 183, none of Uganda's batters managed to score more than 15 runs. Despite the heavy defeat, Uganda captain Brian Masaba took heart from their comeback with the ball in the death overs after the early assault from Gurbaz and Ibrahim. It marked the first occasion of a team not conceding a single boundary during the last six overs of a men's T20 World Cup innings. Masaba and seamer Cosmas Kyewuta shared four wickets between them to restrict Afghanistan's middle-order batters. They will have a chance to bounce back in their next match against PNG on Thursday.
