Former India head coach Rahul Dravid, known for his calm and composed demeanor on the field, displayed a different side of himself following India’s thrilling seven-run victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final held in Barbados. At 51, Dravid, typically reserved in his expressions, allowed himself a moment of exuberance as he celebrated passionately with the trophy. Known for his preference to stay out of the spotlight, Dravid broke from his usual restraint when Virat Kohli presented him with the trophy, showcasing a rare display of emotional intensity. Reflecting on the celebration, Dravid admitted that his outburst was not premeditated. He expressed that, while he generally strives to manage his emotions as a coach, the occasion called for a break from his usual composure.
The victory was a culmination of significant effort and dedication from both the team and the coaching staff, and Dravid felt it was important to share in the joy of the moment. He emphasized that his celebration was a spontaneous reaction to India’s hard-earned triumph, acknowledging the collective effort and hard work that led to their success. For Dravid, this victory was a testament to the team’s determination and resilience, and celebrating with them was a fitting acknowledgment of their achievement.
“You don't plan these things. In most times, I try to keep my emotions in check as a coach and you are expected to do that. But at that time, I felt really happy for the team. I felt happy for the boys. I felt happy for the support staff. So many people who had worked really hard along with me,” former India head coach Rahul Dravid stated during a recent interview.
The former cricketer also discussed the role of luck in securing victories in global tournaments. India had previously reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022 but were defeated by England. In 2023, the team faced setbacks in both the World Test Championship final against Australia and the ODI World Cup final. Dravid acknowledged that despite strong performances, India fell short at critical moments in these high-stakes matches.
However, he expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they managed to secure victory. Dravid noted that while skill and preparation are crucial, luck often plays a significant role in winning major tournaments. He was pleased that the team finally managed to cross the finishing line and claim the title, marking a significant achievement after their recent near-misses. Dravid’s reflections highlight the challenging nature of winning at the highest level and the importance of seizing crucial opportunities when they arise.
“I had been with the team for 2.5-3 years and we had come close a few times, whether it be the semifinals of the last T20 World Cup in Australia, the World Test Championship final or the 50-over World Cup final in India, and we were just not able to cross the line in those critical moments. In those situations you need a little bit of luck, a little bit of destiny to work your way and that day it was with us," he added in the same conversation.
