After India's incredible triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup, skipper Rohit Sharma is definitely being counted amongst the legendary India captains. The senior Indian opener took over the job of India's full-time captaincy in the shortest format of the game after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role in 2021. Under Rohit's leadership, India ended as the semi-finalists in the 2022 T20 World Cup and then suffered a massive heartbreak, losing the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the hands of Australia at home. However, the perspective and thinking changed upside down when India recently lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title held in the West Indies and USA. Rohit was also the first captain to win as many as five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles for the Mumbai Indians (MI).
He'll go down as one of the best captains admits Ravi Shastri on Rohit Sharma
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has applauded India captain Rohit Sharma for his brilliant leadership skills. Without much of doubt, MS Dhoni is surely the benchmark when it comes to counting the best Indian captains so far as he has led the national team to as many as three ICC titles namely, 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. It is almost impossible to match MS Dhoni captaincy records as he has done a lot for the Indian cricket as the skipper.
Ravi Shastri also went on to say that Rohit Sharma will definitely go down as one of India's best captains so far alongside MS Dhoni. Incidentally, Rohit was appointed India's full-time captain especially in the white-ball formats when Shastri's contract as the India head coach ended in 2021.
“As a tactician, let's not forget that he's been an outstanding guy. He'll go down as one of the best captains ever alongside Dhoni. If you ask me who's better, I'd say both are on par when it comes to tactics in the white-ball game. I can't pay a bigger compliment to Rohit than that because you know what MS has done and the titles he has won,” former India head coach Ravi Shastri said on the ICC Review.
Ravi Shastri further applauded Rohit Sharma's tactical captaincy during the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024. The former India cricketer was very much impressed with the way he used the trio of Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah especially in the all-important final against South Africa. In the bowling department, Hardik played a crucial role against the Proteas taking two crucial wickets at the death while Bumrah was absolutely sensational throughout India's victorious campaign.
