Ravichandran Ashwin, a prominent Indian spinner, has defended the Impact Player rule in the IPL 2024, arguing that it plays a significant role in shaping team strategies, despite ongoing debates about its impact on the game’s scoring dynamics. Ashwin acknowledges that while the rule has sparked high scores this season, it is not the sole factor contributing to them. Instead, he views the rule as a crucial element for team tactics, emphasizing its strategic value. Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have expressed concerns about the rule. Sharma has openly stated that he is "not a big fan" of the Impact Player rule, suggesting that it limits the development of potential all-rounders in India. Kohli has also criticized the rule, arguing that it disrupts the balance of the game. Both players believe that the rule might skew the competitive nature of the sport.

In contrast, Ashwin remains steadfast in his belief that the Impact Player rule is a positive addition. He points out that it does not allow batters to suddenly become bowlers, thus maintaining fairness within the game. Ashwin’s perspective highlights his confidence in the rule’s ability to enhance team strategy without undermining the balance between batting and bowling. His stance suggests that the rule, while controversial, is set to be a permanent fixture in the league, shaping the future of T20 cricket in India.

"Why I think the Impact Player rule is not so bad is because it gives a little more value for strategy. The other side of that argument is it doesn't encourage allrounders. But no one is stopping them. In this generation, they don't do it [batters bowling and vice-versa],” said Ravichandran Ashwin on Kris Srikkanth's YouTube show.

“It's not like they're discouraged because of the Impact Player rule. Look at Venkatesh Iyer, he's currently rocking for Lancashire. There's an opportunity for innovation and it makes the game fairer,” he further added.

For those unfamiliar, the Impact Player rule permits a team to substitute an additional player into their lineup at any point during the game, effectively increasing the squad size from 11 to 12. This rule has led to a noticeable trend where teams are utilizing the extra player to bolster their batting strength, resulting in significantly high scores. The presence of an extended batting lineup has posed challenges for bowlers, who are struggling to contain the seemingly endless array of batting talent.

Ravichandran Ashwin has responded to criticisms of the rule by highlighting the impact of environmental factors, such as dew, which can influence the outcome of a match. He points out that the introduction of an extra batter keeps strategic elements at the forefront, even when natural conditions may affect the game. Ashwin argues that the Impact Player rule provides a tactical advantage, particularly in situations where chasing teams face difficulties due to conditions like dew. By allowing teams to adapt their strategies with an additional batter, the rule ensures that teams remain competitive and that strategic decisions play a critical role in determining the match’s outcome. Thus, Ashwin believes that despite the challenges posed to bowlers, the rule adds depth to team strategies and maintains the dynamic nature of the game.

"Games are tighter, an extra player is getting to play. Barring Kolkata or Mumbai, where scores skyrocketed, they haven't been a drastic change elsewhere. Like at Punjab Kings' home venue [Mullanpur], they were all 160-170 games,” Ashwin concluded.
