Star Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been omitted from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. While some senior players opted for a break, captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli committed to play, with Jasprit Bumrah also resting to prepare for the upcoming Test series. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya requested time off for personal reasons. In Jadeja's place, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel have been named, suggesting a strategic shift moving forward. According to reports, this selection strategy is likely to be the blueprint for upcoming matches. Jadeja, despite not being included, hasn't faced criticism for his performances. Instead, the decision reflects a forward-thinking approach by team management to groom a squad for future challenges.

Sources close to the situation emphasized that Jadeja's exclusion is not a reflection of his abilities but rather a deliberate move to provide opportunities to Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ahead of the Champions Trophy. The team management aims to utilize the six upcoming ODIs effectively to integrate these players into the squad and evaluate their readiness for future tournaments.

“There are only six ODIs, including the three in Sri Lanka, before next year's Champions Trophy. The selectors want to utilise the handful of games by giving more opportunities to Axar Patel and Washington Sundar,” said a BCCI source.

“Nothing wrong with Jadeja's performance. The management just wants to look at other options as we have to build a team for the future,” he added.

Axar Patel's journey in international cricket saw him included in India's squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, only to be sidelined due to injury just before the tournament. Despite this setback, he has made significant strides in T20 cricket, becoming a pivotal figure in Rohit Sharma's team during the 2024 T20 World Cup. With 57 ODI appearances to his name, Axar has contributed impressively with 60 wickets and 489 runs, showcasing his utility as an all-rounder in the limited-overs format.

Meanwhile, Washington Sundar is poised to capitalize on his recent performances in white-ball cricket. His role in the Zimbabwe series was notable, where he demonstrated his skills and contributed effectively to the team's success. Looking ahead, Sundar aims to build on this momentum, eyeing more opportunities to establish himself further in the national squad for ODIs and T20s. Both Axar Patel and Washington Sundar represent the next generation of Indian cricketers, each carving out their niche with consistent performances and versatility. As they continue to evolve in their respective roles, their contributions are expected to be crucial in India's quest for success across formats, bolstering the team's depth and competitiveness in international cricket.
