It is hard to single out an individual player as the defaulter in Team India’s disastrous campaign during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. However, it seems that the board has placed Ravindra Jadeja at the top of the list of players to face the consequences. India’s 1-3 defeat against the Kangaroos Down Under highlighted a collective failure of the batting order, with stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leading the disappointment. Updates emerging from the camp suggest that while Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gautam Gambhir appear to be shielded from any repercussions, the Border Gavaskar Trophy may have landed Ravindra Jadeja in a difficult position.

Ravindra Jadeja set to be phased out of ICT: Reports

Ravindra Jadeja was among the players who failed to reverse India's fortunes against the Kangaroos in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. In the edition where India lost their grip on the coveted trophy after a decade, Jadeja featured in three of the five scheduled Tests. Across those matches, the spinner managed to claim only 4 wickets, playing in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Additionally, his contributions with the bat included a half-century, bringing his total to 135 runs at an average of 27. However, his batting performance stood out at the Gabba, where he partnered with KL Rahul in a crucial effort to help India avoid a follow-on. While his recent form has faltered in Tests, ODIs may be the first format to slip out of Jadeja's grasp.

“It's all about when the selectors decide the transition needs to kick in,” the source said. “They will discuss if they want to go with a safe option in (Ravindra) Jadeja or move on right now. Even in Test cricket, he has struggled to get going, though his bowling has been steady,” the source added. “There is an urge to move on from him, especially in the ODI format. It will be a tough call in the coming days.”

Despite the grace saving knock in the Gabba Test, Ravindra Jadeja could be the first to be phased out of India's future scene. A recent report suggests that the BCCI could be reconsidering his place in the team, with the selection committee actively weighing other options. The report furrther opens up to explain that Gautam Gambhir is eyeing to build a fresh force ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The refreshed approach, meanwhile, has no place for the all-rounder.

As far as the near future is concerned, Jadeja’s spot in the Test squad appears safe for now, particularly with the England tour approaching. The selectors are reportedly considering him for the series due to India’s lack of experience in the middle order. For the upcoming Champions Trophy, selectors are aware that Dubai's pitches have traditionally favored slow bowlers, which could work in Jadeja's favor. Yet, as Indian cricket undergoes a transition, the decision on Jadeja's future in the ODI format will be an important one.

“When it comes to Test cricket, Jadeja is still fairly in contention for the England tour due to lack of experience in the middle order,” the source further specified.
