Rishabh Pant is not less than an inspiration for everyone after his incredible comeback to the Indian team after going through a horrific car accident injury last year while traveling to his hometown, Roorkee. Pant faced several injuries for which he was hospitalized and away from the game he loved for more than 16 months. However, with his willpower and hard work, he not only made a return to the cricket field but also became the first-choice wicket-keeper batsman for the Indian team in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Rishabh Pant was born on October 4, 1997, in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India to Rajendra Pant and Saroj Pant. You might not know that at the age of 12, Pant would travel with his mother to Delhi during the weekends to train at the Sonnet Cricket Academy, for which he and his mother stayed at a Gurdwara in Moti Bagh as they did not have suitable accommodation in the city. In the Under-19 match against Assam from Delhi, Pant impressed everyone with a top-scored 35 in his first innings and then hit 150 in the second innings, which he claims was the most important knock in his career. The star Indian batsman has been in a relationship with Isha Negi after she was witnessed cheering from the stands for Pant in 2022 IPL season. However these couples haven't opened yet about their relationship.
Apart from being an Indian International cricketer who represents Men in Blue in all formats of cricket. Pant has played for Delhi in domestic cricket and has also captained Delhi Captains (formerly Delhi Daredevils) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was also the Vice Captain for the U-19 India Team as well as the runner-up at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2016.
Domestic Career
Pant made his domestic cricket debut in October 2015 during the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy matches and then in November, he played for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. During the 2016-17 edition of the Ranji trophy, he knocked 308 runs in one innings in a match against Maharashtra, becoming the third-youngest Indian to score a triple century! Needless to say, he showed his cricketing potential from the beginning.
He continued to grow his list of achievements as in November 2016, he scored the fastest century in 48 balls in the Ranji Trophy match against Jharkhand. In January 2018, he scored another century in just 32 balls during the Zonal T20 League match, making it the second-fastest century in T20 history.
International Achievements
Rishabh made his International debut in January 2017 with the T20I league, followed by his ODI debut in October 2018. Due to his consistent performance, he was presented with the title of ICC Men's Emerging Cricketer of the Year at the ICC Awards, in 2018. That's not all, in February 2021, he was also named Player of the Month in the Men’s category.
The Downfall Of 2019-2020
During 2019-2020, Pant's skills were put in the spotlight as Dhoni announced his departure from International cricket. Team India required a new wicket-keeper who could fill Mahi's shoes and Pant's name was heavily recommended, along with KL Rahul. His ordinary performances put him in the backseat while KL Rahul succeeded.
His performance at the 2020 IPL didn't live up to the mark as he knocked just 343 runs in the season, as compared to his previous high score of 1172 runs in the last two seasons! As a result, he was dropped when India toured Australia in 2021 for the limited-overs matches. This period is often described as having a 'slump' for him and unfortunately, his recent performances were compared to that of Dhoni as Rishabh was going through a rough patch.
Pant bounced back and how! During the final day of the reputed Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020–21, Pant emerged as a knight in shining armour when he scored 89 runs off 138 balls! His impeccable batting stance helped India chase down the target of 328 runs set by the Aussies, who had not been defeated at the Gabba since 1988! He also smashed 101 runs off 118 balls in a Test Match against England, which included 14 boundaries and 2 sixes!
The Iconic Birmingham Knock
Who can forget Rishabh Pant's iconic Birmingham Knock, where Pant changed the course of the game with his fine batting? While India was stumbling at 64/3, he played brilliantly and tallied a score of 146 runs in just 11 balls, helping India get out of the precarious situation.
He also scored a half-century on Day 4 of the Test Match in just 76 balls. Even though he got out at 57 runs, he managed to break a record that was well kept for 72 years for Clyde Walcott, former wicket-keeper batsman of West Indies. The record was for scoring the highest runs in a Test match by a visiting wicket-keeper in England.
In June 2022, he was elected to lead Men in Blue for the T20I matches against South Africa after KL Rahul, the designated captain was ruled out due to an exigent injury. But who knew that Rishabh will meet with a similar feat in 2020?
Road Accident And Aftermath
India's star wicketkeeper-batter was travelling to his hometown Roorkee on December 30, 2022, when he met with a horrific road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. As a result, he suffered multiple injuries on his head, leg, knee, and back and was hospitalised.
This unfortunate incident derailed his career as he spent months in recovery and since then, has made substantial progress. He underwent intricate procedures in February 2023 on all 3 ligaments in his right knee.
Throughout this recovery period, Pant regularly updated his progress via social media as his loyal fans are anticipating his return to international cricket. He even shared a picture on Instagram of his 'first walk' post-surgery.
The talented Southpaw described his accident as a 'second birth' and has made significant progress, thanks to the support from BCCI and his rehabilitation program. On July 21, BCCI issued a detailed press release that revealed that Pant is doing significantly well and has resumed practising in the nets at the NCA (National Cricket Academy).
Pant Promising Comeback!
Life gives second chances to very less people and if it’s giving you another chance, you should grab it like the star Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, who made a return to the cricketing field after a long wait of 16 months in the concluded 17th edition of the Indian Premier League from Delhi-based franchise with holding the responsibility as a captain of the team.
The Southpaw batter proved everyone wrong by scoring the most runs for the Delhi Capitals team in the 2024 edition, where he scored three consecutive half-centuries for the Delhi Capitals franchise and made a return to the Indian team for the first time since November 22, 2022.
Rishabh Pant played a total of 13 games in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League from Delhi, where he scored 446 runs with an average of 40, having 3 fifties to his name. After scoring the most runs in IPL from a Delhi-based franchise, the left-hand batsman continued his brilliant form in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by playing a crucial knock of 53 runs in 32 balls in the warm-up game against Bangladesh, which helped the Indian team to win the match by 60 runs.
