On Thursday, October 31, the much-anticipated list of retained players from each Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise will be unveiled ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revamped the retention rules, allowing franchises to keep up to six players, including one uncapped talent. Among the various speculations surrounding key players and potential auction strategies, Rishabh Pant's name has emerged as a focal point of debate. Pant has captained the Delhi Capitals in 43 matches, including his leadership during IPL 2024, which marked his return to competitive cricket following a serious car accident. His journey back to the sport has been inspirational, but the franchise's turbulent history—with 13 different captains, including Pant—has led to ongoing discussions about his future.
The possibility of Pant entering the auction has sparked interest among fans and analysts alike. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra expressed a keen desire to see Pant take up the captaincy role at Royal Challengers Bangalore, highlighting that many franchises may be willing to invest heavily in the dynamic left-hander. Given his charisma and game-changing ability, it's clear that Pant's next move could significantly influence the IPL landscape, making the upcoming auction a thrilling spectacle for cricket enthusiasts.
"It's being heard that Rishabh Pant might be available at the auction. Although the jury is out, many people say his numbers in T20s are not that good, had only one breakthrough season in the IPL and hasn't scored too many runs apart from that, I can give you in writing that the bank would be broken if his name comes in the auction," former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
"RCB need a keeper, a batter, and maybe a captain. Punjab would need him as they won't have anyone. Delhi would need him back, the RTM card would be available. KKR also need him. What about CSK, they would also need him. If Ishan Kishan is left out, Mumbai would also need him,” he added.
Rishabh Pant's comeback season has been nothing short of remarkable following a two-year injury layoff. The wicketkeeper-batter showcased his skills by scoring an impressive 446 runs in just 13 innings, boasting a striking strike rate of 155.40. His outstanding performances not only reaffirmed his talent but also paved the way for his return to the Indian national team.
Thanks to his exceptional form, Pant quickly re-entered the Indian setup and participated in the T20 World Cup 2024, held in the West Indies and the United States, being part of the winning campaign. His ability to perform at a high level after a prolonged absence speaks volumes about his dedication and resilience. As he navigates this exciting phase of his career, Pant’s contributions will be crucial for both his franchise and the national team. His return has energized fans and sparked conversations about his future role, especially as the IPL 2025 mega auction approach. With expectations high, many are eager to see how Pant will continue to evolve as a player and leader in the coming seasons.
