Whenever one talks about the pull shot in cricket, Rohit Sharma’s name immediately pops up in our head. He is indeed one of the best pullers in the game and his ability to convert small starts into big ones is second to none. Several international bowlers have struggled to bowl against him when he is on song. Today, Rohit Sharma has built an empire for himself, but this empire didn’t arise in a day.
The right-handed batsman made his international debut in the one-day internationals in 2007. Despite getting a chance at an early age, he struggled to find consistency. He was slotted in as a lower middle-order batsman in 2007- a position where he didn't find a lot of success. His first-ever century came in 2010 in a tri-nation series against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.
However, MS Dhoni’s decision to promote him as an opener changed the trajectory of his career. Today, he has 48 centuries across formats.
On that note, let’s delve deeper into Rohit Sharma centuries!
As far as one-day internationals are concerned, he has 31 centuries. He is currently third on the all-time list of most centuries in ODI cricket. In Test cricket, the Indian captain boasts of 12 centuries. Unfortunately, he hasn’t enjoyed a long career in the longest format and, thus, has lesser number of centuries as compared to ODIs.
Having said that, Rohit Sharma was no less than a beast in T20 internationals. He has retired from the shortest format in international cricket but holds the record for scoring the joint most number of centuries along with Glenn Maxwell in T20Is- 5.
The highest score by Rohit Sharma in an ODI format, 264, is a part of his 31-century club in the ODI format. Rohit Sharma made sure that Sri Lanka paid a price for dropping a catch early in the game. He scored 33 fours and nine sixes in the inning at Eden Gardens where India posted 404 runs. In that game, India registered a humongous 150-run victory.
Rohit Sharma’s first Test century came against West Indies at his favorite ground, Eden Gardens, in 2013. Coming down at No.6, Rohit Sharma scored 177 runs from 301 deliveries, containing 23 fours and a six. This helped India post a daunting 453 runs in the first inning, causing the West Indies to lose the game by an inning.
He made his T20I debut in 2007, but his first century came in 2015 against South Africa in a bilateral series. He scored 106 runs at Dharamshala to take the side to 199 for the loss of five wickets. India though lost that game but that was the only century that came in a losing cause for Rohit in T20 internationals.
Rohit has retired from T20Is but he is still going strong in the other two formats. India are scheduled to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting 22nd November and Rohit Sharma has a big role to play. The fans would expect him to showcase his mettle and score those daddy hundreds.
