RR vs GT: Vaibhav Suryavanshi becomes the youngest player to hit a half-century in IPL
The ongoing IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans has stepped into the record books, courtesy of the 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Coming in to open the chase, Suryavanshi took on the seasoned GT bowlers as if he always belonged. Charging against Ishant Sharma and Washington Sundar in the powerplay, Suryavanshi hit his maiden IPL century off just 17 deliveries. At 14 years, Suryavanshi overtook his captain, Riyan Parag, as the youngest player to hit a half-century in the T20 League. Before the RR vs GT IPL 2025 match, Parag held the record, hitting his maiden half-century at 17 years and 175 days. Interestingly, third in the list behind Suryavanshi and Parag is their teammate, Sanju Samson.

Opting to bowl first, the home team fell victim to the sublime form of the GT top-order. The Gujarat Titans skipper, Shubman Gill, hit a swift half-century as the visitors weaved a 93-run partnership for the opening wicket. RR, 9th in the table, looked fated to pick another loss as Gujarat Titans didn't slow down. While Gill and Sudharsan walked off, a 26-ball half-century by Jos Buttler ensured that GT crossed the 200-run mark, posting a mammoth 210 for Rajasthan Royals to chase.
As Sanju Samson remains sidelined due to his side injury, Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued in the opening slot along with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Unperturbed by the steep chase ahead of them, the RR openers started their onslaught right from the word go. With a six in the first over against Mohammed Siraj, Suryavanshi sent a warning to the GT bowlers of what awaited. As Shubman Gill rested in the dugout, the interim captain, Rashid Khan, introduced Ishant Sharma into the attack, who was hit for a six by Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The fourth over, when Ishant returned to attack, is when the real fireworks started. The 36-year-old seamer was grilled for as many as 28 runs by the 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Picking the lengths seamlessly and powering his shots, Suryavanshi smashed 6,6,4,0,6 off Ishant before the seamer started going wayward. Following two consecutive wides from there, the pacer was hit for another boundary by the youngster to conclude the over.
Washington Sundar then joined the defense as the pacers took shade against Suryavanshi. The difference between pacer and spinner seemed to elude the young gun as he treated the spin all-rounder similarly. Hitting Sundar for two sixes and a four, Suryavanshi charged to his maiden half-century off just 17 balls. The half-century is now the fastest by any batter in IPL 2025, as Vaibhav Suryavanshi overtook Nicholas Pooran and Abhishek Sharma in the list, who hit an 18-ball and a 19-ball fifty in the ongoing season respectively.
