In a massive breaking news development, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season due to a fracture on his elbow. After winning their opening match of the season against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, things have turned out really disastrous for the five-time champions as they have suffered as many as four losses in a row against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. Currently, the Chennai Super Kings are placed at the ninth position on the points table with just a single win from their five matches in the ongoing T20 competition.

MS Dhoni set to take over as CSK captain for remainder of IPL 2025

The Chennai Super Kings have released an official statement that their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has sustained a hairline fracture on the elbow and thus, he has been ruled out for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2025 season. During a recent media conference, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has also confirmed that the legendary uncapped player MS Dhoni will take over as the CSK captain for their remaining IPL 2025 campaign. Incidentally, Gaikwad sustained a nasty blow on his elbow earlier during the match against Rajasthan Royals, but he never missed the last few matches and even mentioned at one of the tosses that he was absolutely fit.

Just like the Chennai Super Kings, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad also kickstarted his IPL 2025 journey with the bat on an amazing note as he scored an impressive knock of 53 runs off just 26 balls that included 6 fours and 3 sixes. He also smashed a fine half-century in the losing run-chase against Rajasthan Royals and the right-hander ended up notching 122 runs from 5 matches in the T20 competition at a superb strike-rate of more than 150. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming also revealed that they are yet to decide on Gaikwad's replacement for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.

However, the biggest question still remains that whether a 43-year-old MS Dhoni can help the Chennai Super Kings make a turnaround one more time. Under his captaincy, CSK have already won as many as five titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Interestingly, Dhoni was retained as an uncapped player by the Chennai Super Kings at a nominal price of INR 4 Crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, he has received a lot of criticism during this tournament especially when he came to bat at the No.9 position in the run-chase against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on their own home-turf.

Former CSK captain and veteran finisher MS Dhoni has definitely lost his prime as he is consistently failing to finish matches this season. Although he has still managed to smash a total of 103 runs from as many as 5 matches in IPL 2025 at a strike-rate of more than 153. The Chennai Super Kings will be hosting the Kolkata Knight Riders in their fourth home game during the ongoing IPL 2025 season on 11 April, 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

“As far as replacements go we have few options in the squad. We haven’t zeroed in on anyone. Dhoni was ready to take over. He understood where it was coming from,” said Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming during a recent interview.

"He got hit in Guwahati. He’s been operating with an amount of pain. We got an X-ray, which was inconclusive, and we had an MRI, which revealed a fracture in his elbow, in the radial neck," he added.
