Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials were reportedly disappointed with Sanju Samson’s decision to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier List A tournament. Samson, who had been under consideration for a spot in India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan and UAE, found himself in a complicated situation following his absence from the prestigious domestic competition. The cricketer's no-show raised eyebrows within the board, especially as the selectors were closely monitoring his form and fitness ahead of major international assignments. The timing of Samson's absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy has sparked concerns, particularly as the national selectors are preparing to finalize the squad for India’s upcoming ODI series against England and the much-anticipated Champions Trophy.

Sanju Samson set to be dropped from India squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025?

With the India squad selection meeting expected to take place soon, Samson’s participation—or lack thereof—has become a key point of discussion among the selectors. Given the significance of domestic performance in the selection process, the BCCI is likely to conduct an investigation into why Samson chose to skip the tournament. His absence could be viewed as a missed opportunity to prove his form and suitability for the national team, especially when other players are looking to stake their claim for a place in the squad. The outcome of this inquiry could play a crucial role in determining Samson's future with the national team and his chances of securing a spot in upcoming international fixtures.

Sanju Samson’s failure to confirm his participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy led to the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) dropping him from the squad. The uncertainty surrounding his availability prompted the KCA to take the decision, as they didn’t want a young player to miss out on a spot due to Samson’s indecision. KCA Secretary Vinod S Kumar explained that the association needed clarity on Samson’s commitment, and with the tournament fast approaching, they had no choice but to move forward with other options.

Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will conduct a probe into Samson’s absence before January 19. The investigation will focus on understanding the reasons behind his withdrawal from the tournament and his lack of communication regarding his availability. Following this probe, a decision will be made regarding Samson’s future in international cricket. This meeting could have serious implications for his selection in upcoming series, including the England ODIs and the Champions Trophy, as the BCCI and selectors assess his commitment and fitness for national duty. Samson's future with the Indian team could hinge on the outcome of this inquiry.

“The selectors and the board have been very clear on the importance of domestic cricket. Last year, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer lost central contracts for missing domestic matches without seeking permission. Even in Samson's case, the board and selectors were not given any reason why he missed the tournament. All that is known so far is that he spends much of his time in Dubai,” BCCI sources told Times of India.

Sanju Samson, the 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, has been selected for India’s upcoming T20I series against England, which begins on January 22. However, his spot in the India squad for England ODIs remains uncertain. While his inclusion in the T20I side is confirmed, the presence of established players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, both available for selection in the 50-over format, complicates his chances for the ODIs. Interestingly, reports suggest that KL Rahul has requested not to be considered as a wicketkeeper in longer formats due to ongoing hamstring issues over the past couple of years. This could potentially open a window for Samson to feature in the ODI squad as a backup wicketkeeper.

However, the BCCI is keen to understand the reasons behind Samson’s absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The board has made it clear that if no valid explanation is provided, it could impact his chances of being included in the ODI squad, despite the backing he has received from the team management. The situation is now delicate for Samson, as his future in the ODI setup may hinge on the clarity he provides regarding his commitment to domestic cricket.

“The selectors would want a valid reason. Otherwise, it will be difficult to consider him for the ODI season. Samson has had a bitter history with the KCA, but that needs to be sorted out for him to play in domestic cricket. It can't be that the state association and him have a misunderstanding, and he misses out on game time. He did play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy preceding the Vijay Hazare Trophy," the source added.
