The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will remain a part of the national team despite being named in a First Information Report (FIR) linked to a murder case. This development has stirred considerable controversy, as Shakib’s involvement in the FIR emerged during a period of significant civil unrest in Bangladesh. The issue gained legal traction when Shajib Mahmood Alam, a Supreme Court lawyer, issued a legal notice to the BCB. Alam's notice called for Shakib's immediate suspension from all forms of cricket, citing violations of International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations. The legal pressure has prompted the BCB to address the situation, but the board has opted to stand by Shakib, highlighting their commitment to supporting their players amid legal and political challenges.
Despite the complex legal and public relations landscape, the BCB’s decision underscores their confidence in Shakib’s role within the team. The board's stance reflects their intention to maintain stability and support for their players, even in the face of serious allegations. As the situation continues to unfold, the BCB remains firm in its position, emphasizing the importance of due process and the ongoing contribution of Shakib Al Hasan to Bangladesh cricket.
"He [Shakib] will continue playing. We received a legal notice regarding bringing him back and we replied them saying this [that he will continue to play]," BCB president Faruque Ahmed was quoted in a leading Bengali Daily Prothom Alo.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a definitive stance regarding the recent FIR involving star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The board maintains that the FIR, which is currently in its early stages, does not serve as evidence of guilt. Emphasizing their commitment to fairness, the BCB has stated that they are prepared to offer legal support to Shakib if required.
In the meantime, the BCB has granted Shakib a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in a County cricket match for Surrey. Shakib is scheduled to play against Somerset in England from September 9 to 12. Following this engagement, he will return to represent the Bangladesh national team in a series of important fixtures. Shakib is set to join the team for two Test matches and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against India.
The BCB's decision to support Shakib’s participation in both international and domestic matches reflects their confidence in his professionalism and their dedication to ensuring that his cricketing career remains on track. By providing him with the necessary clearance for his County appearance and reaffirming his role in the national team, the BCB demonstrates a balanced approach in navigating the complexities of the ongoing legal situation.
"He [Shakib] has not played red-ball cricket for a while and that is why we have given him an NOC to play for Surrey as it will help him to adjust with red-ball cricket more than anything else," a BCB official said in a recent interview.
