“I always had one goal in mind that was to play for India and I achieved it thanks to a lot of people. First of all of all my family, my childhood coach Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma under their guidance, I learnt cricket. Then my entire team with whom I played for years, I got another family, fame and everyone’s love and support,” former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan said in the video.
“As it’s said that in order to move ahead in the story you need to flip over the pages. Hence, I’m also doing that. I’m announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket," he added.
Shikhar Dhawan, whose final appearance for the Indian team was in 2022, had gradually seen his place in the squad taken by emerging talents such as Shubman Gill. After his exit from the national side, Dhawan continued his cricketing journey by playing for the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, his time with the franchise was plagued by injury issues, which limited his impact on the field.
Despite these challenges, Dhawan leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of Indian cricket’s finest opening batters. Over the course of his illustrious career, he amassed a total of 10,867 runs across 269 matches, which includes an impressive tally of 24 centuries and 44 half-centuries. His ability to dominate bowling attacks and set the tone for his team made him a key player in Indian cricket's recent history.
Dhawan’s contributions were particularly crucial during the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England. His stellar performances, alongside Rohit Sharma, were instrumental in leading India to victory in the tournament. Their partnership throughout the competition was a driving force behind India's triumph, and Dhawan’s role in that success cemented his place in the annals of Indian cricket. As he retires, Dhawan’s impact on the game and his memorable performances will be fondly remembered by cricket fans. His career, characterized by significant achievements and memorable moments, has left an enduring mark on the sport.
