On August 24, 2024, Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket via a post on his social media account. At 38 years old, Dhawan has been a significant figure in cricket, inspiring openers around the world with his remarkable performances and establishing himself as one of the premier openers of the last decade. His career took off after his stellar performances in the 2013 Champions Trophy, where he played a pivotal role and became a cornerstone of the Indian team.
Dhawan’s last appearance on the international stage was in 2022, after which he lost his place to emerging talents such as Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Despite stepping away from professional cricket, Dhawan remains a prominent figure in the sport. Following his retirement announcement, he was approached about the possibility of a biopic based on his life. Dhawan expressed enthusiasm for the idea, sharing his interest in having a film made about his journey and achievements. He suggested that actors Akshay Kumar or Ranveer Singh would be ideal choices to portray him, given their versatile acting skills and ability to capture his essence on screen. Dhawan’s retirement marks the end of a notable era in Indian cricket, and his thoughts on a potential biopic reflect his lasting impact and the admiration he has garnered throughout his career.
“I would love it, only if it is made well. As for me acting in it, I would happily do it in case I added any value to the film. As for other actors, I would love for Akshay paaji (Akshay Kumar) to do it, or even Ranveer Singh, for the sheer energy he has,” former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan told Hindustan Times.
When asked whether he is concerned about losing his fame after retirement, Shikhar Dhawan confidently addressed the question. The 38-year-old cricketer expressed his belief that his popularity would not wane, even after stepping away from the game. Dhawan is optimistic that his fanbase will not only remain steadfast but potentially expand further. He attributed this confidence to the enduring affection and support he has received from fans throughout his career.
Dhawan’s response highlighted his enduring connection with his supporters and his belief in the lasting impact of his contributions to cricket. He acknowledged the significance of his relationship with fans, emphasizing that their continued admiration and respect would keep his legacy alive. By focusing on the positive aspects of his retirement, Dhawan showed a mature and forward-looking perspective, recognizing that his influence and presence would persist beyond his active playing days. His assurance reflects a sense of contentment and pride in his career achievements, coupled with a positive outlook on the future. As he transitions into retirement, Dhawan remains confident that his journey and accomplishments will continue to resonate with fans and that his legacy in the cricketing world will endure.
“Why will I lose fame if I give up cricket? Who knows, the fame might increase also. Main logon ke dilon mein basa hua hoon. Not only through cricket…sometimes even through my Instagram reels (laughs). I’m definite that the love I get from people will continue to grow,” Dhawan added.
