The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced India's 16-member squad for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, which will begin with the first Test. The squad includes several experienced players returning to the fold, as well as a notable debut for left-arm pacer Yash Dayal. However, the omission of Shreyas Iyer from the list has sparked discussion about his short-term future in Test cricket, particularly from former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra. He pointed out Iyer's impressive performance during India's tour of Bangladesh in 2022, where he had a notable impact. Despite this, Chopra observed that Iyer's form has been inconsistent since then. This decline in performance may have influenced the decision to leave him out of the current squad. Chopra's comments reflect a broader concern about Iyer's ability to sustain his place in the Test team in the near term.
The discussion surrounding Iyer’s omission underscores the competitive nature of selection in international cricket and highlights the challenges players face in maintaining their form and securing their positions. As Indian cricket moves forward, the focus will be on how the selected squad performs against Bangladesh and how individual players like Shreyas Iyer navigate their careers amidst intense competition and scrutiny.
"It's interesting that the last time when we beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh, Shreyas Iyer gave a very important performance in the last match. We won because he played a crucial knock, but since then, the world has changed. I don't see any chances for Shreyas Iyer in Tests at the moment," responded former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra to a question asked by one of the commenters in a recent video on YouTube he uploaded.
Aakash Chopra further emphasized Shreyas Iyer's challenging situation by noting that, among the current squad members, he could identify at least three players who might not make the cut for the first Test. This highlights just how distant Iyer is from securing a spot in the team at present. In addition to discussing Iyer, Chopra also addressed the case of Ishan Kishan, who has been sidelined for some time. Chopra stressed that the wicketkeeper-batter’s path back into the Indian team would largely depend on his performance in domestic cricket. He specifically mentioned that Kishan needs to participate in the Ranji Trophy and excel there to improve his chances of making a return to the national squad.
Chopra’s insights reflect the competitive nature of Indian cricket and the importance of domestic performances in determining international selection. Both Iyer and Kishan face significant challenges as they seek to regain their places in the team, and their success in domestic competitions will be crucial in shaping their future prospects.
"It's being said that he was unfit and because of that, he didn't play. He played one or two matches in Buchi Babu and then wasn't playing elsewhere. He will have to play the Ranji Trophy. Let's be fair, there is no other cricket now. So go and play in the Ranji Trophy and score runs, which he can do, he is a good player," mentioned Chopra.
