Shadow has been cast over the participation of Shubman Gill in the first India vs New Zealand Test in Bengaluru. The batter has displayed a fine form in Test cricket this season. Th 25-year-old started this year with a century against England. Having played 8 Tests this year, Gill has smashed three centuries. However, India could be without his services against New Zealand in the upcoming clash against New Zealand. The three-match series is set to kick off at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, October 16. As per the latest update from the team, Gill has complained of discomfort in his neck and shoulder on the eve of the New Zealand match.

Shubman Gill could miss the first India vs New Zealand Test in Bengaluru

The 25-year-old Shubman Gill raised concerns for a stiff neck with the team management on Monday. A final decision on his availability will only be made closer to the start of the match on Wednesday morning. In the event that Gill is ruled out, India will have to make a crucial decision, as they do not have a direct replacement for him at No. 3. However, the India squad consists of many player in their arsenal who can seamlessly adapt to the position.

Players like KL Rahul or Sarfaraz Khan could step into the position if required. Gill’s absence could also create an opportunity for wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel to break into the playing XI. Sarfaraz Khan, who recently delivered a sensational double century for Mumbai in the Duleep Trophy, is a strong contender to replace Gill.

After a promising start to his Test career against England, Sarfaraz has been somewhat unlucky, having lost his spot following KL Rahul's return from injury. If Sarfaraz is included in the playing XI, India may need to reshuffle their batting order, with Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, or Rishabh Pant being potential candidates to step into the No. 3 role.

India heads into the series after a 2-0 Test win over Bangladesh, brimming with confidence. Historical trends also favor India, as New Zealand has never won a Test series on Indian soil in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC). However, with rain expected to interrupt play across all five days, the outcome of the match is in question. The wet and overcast conditions could also influence India's team selection decisions.
