Riyan Parag made a memorable debut in One Day Internationals on Wednesday, August 7, at the renowned R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, facing off against Sri Lanka. Although he delivered an impressive performance with the ball, his efforts were not enough to secure a crucial victory for India in the third ODI. Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the series, winning 2-0. Despite the team's defeat, August 7 was a landmark day for Parag, marking a significant milestone in his cricketing career. Before the match, he was honored to receive his maiden ODI cap from the legendary Virat Kohli. Kohli, a former captain of the Indian team, expressed his confidence in Parag’s potential. During the cap presentation, Kohli highlighted Parag's capabilities, suggesting that the Assam all-rounder has the talent and skill to become a pivotal match-winner for India in the future.

The occasion was a blend of personal achievement for Parag and a moment of reflection for the Indian team, who were unable to clinch the series. Nevertheless, the day stood out as a highlight in Parag’s journey, marking the beginning of what is hoped to be a successful international career.

“Riyan, firstly congratulations for getting to play your first game for India. In today’s cricket, we all know apart from performances, people who are responsible for you guys getting selected were watching you and they’ve seen something special in you. And having spoken to GG Bhai, selectors, Rohit and everyone, they see something special in you,” said former India captain Virat Kohli in a video shared by BCCI.

“You have that ability to be a match-winner for India. I know you have that belief, I’ve known you for a while now and we all have that belief in you. No better time to step in today, 0-1 down, to start off your international career. With an impactful presence on the field ball bat and fielding as well, I wish you all the best. Cap 256, Riyan Parag,” he added.

The encouraging words of praise and motivation from Virat Kohli are expected to resonate deeply with Riyan Parag, fueling his drive to establish himself on the international stage. Parag, who debuted internationally last month during the T20I series against Zimbabwe, faced a challenging yet promising opportunity in his ODI debut on August 7. In the third ODI against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium, Parag made a notable impact with the ball. He bowled nine overs in the first innings, capturing the crucial wickets of Avishka Fernando, Charith Asalanka, and Dunith Wellalage while conceding 54 runs. His performance showcased his potential and skill in international cricket.

India, chasing a target of 249 runs in spin-friendly conditions, faced early trouble and lost half their side for just 73 runs within the first 13 overs. Parag, batting at No. 7, managed to hit a boundary off his very first ball. However, his innings was cut short when he was dismissed by the in-form Jeffrey Vandersay for 15 runs off 13 balls in the 16th over. The Indian team struggled to build partnerships and was eventually bowled out for 138 in 26.1 overs, leading to a comprehensive 110-run victory for Sri Lanka.

Despite the defeat, Parag’s debut performance and the positive reinforcement from Kohli mark the beginning of a promising career. His ability to rise to the occasion and his future potential will be keenly watched as he continues to grow in international cricket.
