Sri Lanka national cricket team have made their nation proud after defeating Men in Blue in a 3-match ODI series after a long wait of 27 years. This win is very special for the Island nation as they were going through a rough time for the last 2 years when they got an early exit from the 2 ICC events 2023 and 2024 T20 World Cup, which made them make several changes in their team management and captain. Before coming out into this series, the team announced Charith Asalanaka as the new captain after Wanindu Hasranga resigned from the captaincy position after the Lankan Lion's horrible performance in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 where they failed to qualify for Super 8 stage of the tournament.
One of the reasons for Sri Lanka's win is their young players, who stood tall against the Indian team in the absence of senior players when they were ruled out from the series due to their respective injuries. Irrespective, the young guns performed brilliantly by picking key wickets and scoring runs for the team.
Players like Pathum Nissanka, Dunith Wellalage and Jeffrey Vandersay are the best in the tournament. However, the reason for their impeccable form goes to the Sri Lankan team's interim head coach and Management, who have been working with them for a long time. Despite not getting the opportunity early, they kept believing in their skills and grabbed it in both hands by showing their skills against the number 1 team in the world.
Talking about Young Guns' performance after winning the series, the current head coach of the Sri Lankan team praised the efforts of young players like Wellalage, Nisssanka and captain Charith Asalanka who played a pivotal role in winning the series.
"We have been working with players like Wellalage, Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Asalanka, all are very young players. Hasaranga got injured and Vandersay has been there for a long time but never got the opportunity and when we gave the opportunity, he grabbed it with both hands," the coach said.
Pathum Nissanka was among the leading run-scorers from the Lankan team in T20I series with 137 runs in 3 games with a batting average of 45. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s star spinner Jeffrey Vandersay was the highest wicket-taker in the IND vs Sri Lanka three-match ODI series. The leg spinner bagged eight wickets in just two outings. Dunith Wellalage is slotted second with seven scalps to his name.
