In the electrifying clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 25th, all eyes were on Virat Kohli. Winning the toss, RCB's captain, Faf du Plessis, opted to bat first, setting the stage for Kohli's anticipated brilliance. Launching into action with a fine 32 off just 18 balls in the powerplay, Kohli's bat wielded like a magician's wand, promising another masterclass. The cricketing world braced for a spectacle as the former RCB skipper orchestrated the innings. However, the narrative took a twist as Kohli encountered the formidable spin duo of Shahbaz Ahmed and Mayank Markande from SRH. Their crafty deliveries seemed to ensnare Kohli, halting his momentum. Despite his valiant efforts, Kohli struggled to find gaps and the runs began to trickle rather than flow.
Disappointment swept across the stands as Kohli's innings faltered. Managing only 19 runs off his next 25 deliveries, the anticipation of a substantial score gave way to scrutiny. It was Jaydev Unadkat who finally broke through Kohli's defenses in the 15th over, ending his vigil at 51 runs off 43 balls. The cricketing fraternity, including the venerable Sunil Gavaskar, voiced their dismay at Kohli's inability to push through the middle overs with his trademark aggression. As the match progressed, Kohli's innings became a topic of intense debate, underscoring the fine margins that separate greatness from criticism in the world of cricket.
“In the middle, he just seemed to have lost touch. I am not sure of the exact numbers, but I think from 31-32 to the time he got out, he did not hit a boundary. So at the end of the day, when he got out when you are facing the strike in the first ball of the innings and you get out in the 14th or the 15th over, you have got strike rate of 118, that's not what your team expects from you,” said former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar during a recent conversation.
Former Australia cricketer Simon Katich echoed the sentiment that Virat Kohli's innings came at a significant cost for the Bengaluru-based franchise. Despite a strong start, they were eyeing a total surpassing 220 against the formidable SRH batting lineup. However, thanks to Rajat Patidar's explosive 50 off just 20 balls, RCB managed to post 206/7. Their bowling unit then efficiently curtailed SRH's chase, restricting them 35 runs shy of the target.
Although Kohli's recent innings lacked acceleration, he maintains his position atop the IPL 2024 highest run-scorers list, accumulating 430 runs thus far. Despite individual brilliance, RCB finds themselves at the bottom of the table with only four points to their name. Next up for Bengaluru is a clash against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Sunday, April 28th. It's a crucial opportunity for RCB to turn their fortunes around and climb up the rankings in the tournament.
