Just three years ago, the Gujarat Titans announced their arrival in the Indian Premier League, taking everyone by surprise by lifting the title in their debut season. To further assert their dominance, they made it to their second consecutive final the following year but, unfortunately, couldn’t secure the trophy. Last season, the Titans had a decent outing but failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in three years. However, they have continued to place their faith in Shubman Gill’s leadership abilities, and he has a lot to prove this season.

Additionally, the franchise has retained key players like Rashid Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, and Sai Sudharsan. With a well-balanced squad at his disposal, it will be exciting to see how Gill leads his team this season. In this article, we will analyze Gujarat Titans’ squad using a SWOT analysis:

Strengths: Stability in the top order and a strong fast-bowling attack

The top order looks well-settled, with Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler opening the innings, followed by Sai Sudharsan at number three. All three players are known for their ability to play big knocks, and the trio is expected to do the bulk of the scoring.

One of Gujarat’s biggest strengths remains their bowling attack. Mohammed Siraj is a strong candidate to fill the void left by Mohammed Shami. The pace unit also boasts quality options like Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna, Gerald Coetzee, and Ishant Sharma.

Weaknesses: An unreliable middle order

While the top three look solid, Gujarat’s middle order could be a major concern. For the overseas slots, they have Glenn Phillips and Sherfane Rutherford, while the Indian contingent features Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, and Mahipal Lomror. Although these players possess quality, it remains uncertain whether they can consistently deliver match-winning performances throughout the season.

Opportunities: A crucial season for Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj

After failing to take his side to the playoffs last year, skipper Shubman Gill will be under scrutiny. This season will be a big test of his leadership skills as well as his batting prowess. Currently not a part of India’s T20I setup, an outstanding IPL campaign could help him reclaim his spot in the national side.

Similarly, this season is extremely crucial for Mohammed Siraj. Having missed out on the ICC Champions Trophy squad, he is currently not in India’s plans for white-ball cricket. The IPL presents a great opportunity for him to make a strong comeback.

Threats: Injury concerns in the fast-bowling department

Despite having a formidable fast-bowling unit, injuries could be a major setback for Gujarat. Prasidh Krishna has struggled with recurring injuries, while Ishant Sharma is unlikely to play a full season. The Titans will be hoping that their fast bowlers remain fit to maximize their effectiveness throughout the tournament.
