Ajinkya Rahane maintained his stellar form as Mumbai triumphed in the first semifinal of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, defeating Baroda at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 13. Winning the toss, Mumbai skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first, a decision that paid off as Baroda was restricted to a modest total of 158/7. The chase was all about Rahane, who opened the innings with Prithvi Shaw. After Shaw’s dismissal, Rahane took charge, shifting gears seamlessly to dominate the Baroda bowlers. He formed a solid partnership with Iyer, scoring quickly and finding the boundary at will. Rahane’s innings were studded with 11 boundaries and five towering sixes, showcasing a perfect blend of precision and power. Although he fell agonizingly short of a century, his 98 off 56 balls, at a blistering strike rate of 175, ensured Mumbai cruised to victory.
Rahane’s positive approach has been a hallmark of his campaign this season. Speaking after the game, the veteran credited his success to maintaining a "positive intent" and focusing on playing for the team. His innings not only secured Mumbai's spot in the final but also reaffirmed his class and ability to perform under pressure. The win underlines Mumbai’s dominance in the tournament, with Rahane emerging as a pivotal figure in their journey. As they prepare for the final, Rahane’s consistency and leadership will be crucial in their pursuit of the coveted trophy.
“Really happy with the way I am batting. Happy we won the match, hundreds will keep happening but it is about winning matches, keeping a positive intent and playing for the team. The way the T20 is moving, you need to capitalize on the first six overs. I was batting at number 4 initially but I was told by the team management to open the batting, and I realise it is important to capitalize in the powerplay,” said senior Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane in a recent interview.
“We have batters who can tonk the ball all around the ground later on, so that makes my job easier. We sit together during our practice sessions and we like to have one-on-one sessions, our job is to share our experience and give the youngsters that freedom,” he added.
