Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag pulled no punches in his critique of Shakib Al Hasan following the latter's underwhelming performances in Bangladesh's initial T20 World Cup matches. Sehwag bluntly expressed his belief that the seasoned all-rounder wasn't adding much value to the team and suggested retirement from the format, allowing others to step up and contribute meaningfully. Shakib swiftly responded to Sehwag's criticisms, not with words, but with a stellar display on the field. In Bangladesh's clash against Netherlands, he showcased his prowess with an unbeaten 64 off 46 balls, playing a pivotal role in his team's 25-run victory and edging them closer to securing a spot in the Super 8 stage. Post-match, Shakib addressed Sehwag's remarks, admitting that he had no direct response to such criticisms. Instead, he conveyed his determination to improve in the upcoming matches, indicating a willingness to let his performance speak for itself.
This swift comeback from Shakib not only silenced his critics momentarily but also underscored his resilience and commitment to excel in the sport. It served as a reminder of his capabilities and the impact he can have on the team's fortunes when in form. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Shakib to see if he can maintain this momentum and lead Bangladesh to further success on the global stage.
“A player never comes to answer anyone else. A player's task is to bat if he is a batter, contribute to the team, bowl well if he is a bowler as getting wickets sometimes also depends on luck, and if he is a fielder then to save runs and take the catches that come his way,” Shakib Al Hasan told reporters.
“There is nothing to answer to anyone. I think when a current player is not being able to contribute to the team as much as is expected of him then it usually invites a lot of questions, and I don't think it is a very bad thing,” he added.
Following Bangladesh's victory over Netherlands, Shakib emphasized the significance of one of the top four batters anchoring the innings until the conclusion. With Bangladesh struggling at 23/2 when he stepped onto the crease, Shakib recognized the urgency for a substantial contribution from him. He expressed satisfaction in fulfilling that role and acknowledged the effective support from the bowlers, particularly Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain. Shakib's sentiment underscores the importance of key players stepping up in critical moments, and his acknowledgment of the bowlers highlights the team's collective effort in securing the win.
“It was important for someone from the top four to bat throughout the innings. Happy with the way I contributed with the bat. It wasn't an easy wicket at the start of the innings. We held our nerves, put on a decent total. I won't say it was a winning total, but it was a challenging total. Bowlers chipped in perfectly, especially the Fizz and Rishad,” Shakib concluded.
