"They May Not Need Me" - David Warner On Champions Trophy 2025 Selection

"They May Not Need Me" - David Warner On Champions Trophy 2025 Selection

Source: Cricket Australia/Twitter

Star Australian opener David Warner announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs in January 2024, but he is still available for T20 matches. Consequently, he was selected for Australia's squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Warner was a key player in Australia's World Cup 2023 winning squad. However, he believes the team won't require his services for another 50-over tournament. After the T20 World Cup in 2024, the top seven teams from the 2023 ODI World Cup will compete in the Champions Trophy, which is set to take place in Pakistan in 2025. At 37 years old, Warner will find it challenging to pursue another 50-over World Cup dream.

"They May Not Need Me" - David Warner Reflects On Champions Trophy 2025 Selection

In the recent warm-up match against Namibia at Port of Spain, Australia was forced to take the field with just nine players, as several stars have yet to reach after their participation in the IPL 2024 season. The 2021 champions relied on veteran opener David Warner to chase down 119 with the utmost ease. The left-handed batter smashed an unbeaten 54 off just 21 balls, which helped the 2023 ODI champions chase down the target in just 10 overs. Warner's quick fifty gave Australia an early boost after an inconsistent IPL campaign and has raised hopes of winning the trophy once again. While discussions about his potential consideration for the Champions Trophy selection are ongoing, David Warner emphasized the fearless approach of Australian cricket. He also added that individual interests are set aside as the team comes first.

"They may not need me (about Australia's 2025 Champions Trophy campaign). We've always played fearless, and I think that's why we've been so successful over the last few years. We don't care about our spot in a team, we just care about doing the best that we can, and making sure that whatever we're doing, we're trying to be that match winner," David Warner said.

"And the fortunate thing is that we've got so many of them. One might come off one day, the next day someone else will come off. So we just know that one person in that top six, if they can get anywhere between 60 to 80 runs at a good strike rate, we know we're always going to post a good total," Warner added.

Unlike David Warner, Steven Smith was omitted from the Australia T20 World Cup squad. This decision was made as the right-handed batter struggled with poor form in T20Is. Despite opening for Sydney Sixers in the BBL 2023, his rough patch persisted, leaving him behind in the selection process.
