Sunrisers Hyderabad not only broke their losing streak at the MA Chidambaram Stadium but also kept their hopes alive for qualification after beating Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in the 43rd match of the IPL 2025 on Friday. It wasn’t an easy surface to bat on as the ball wasn’t coming nicely onto the bat. However, 154 was still a below-par score posted by Chennai Super Kings in the first innings. Led by Harshal Patel’s 4 for 28, SRH showcased a clinical performance with the ball.

Chennai Super Kings fought hard with the ball and stayed in the hunt for the most part of the run-chase. But Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy guided the team home eventually in 18.4 overs with five wickets in hand. Unfortunately for CSK fans, it has been a disappointing season for the Yellow Army and their chances of qualification are now seemingly all but over.

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at three talking points from CSK vs SRH IPL 2025 clash:

  1. Chennai Super Kings once again miss the finishing touch

It was Ayush Mhatre in the powerplay and then Dewald Brevis in the middle-overs that instilled confidence in the team’s dugout. The former gave a strong start, while Brevis showcased his mettle in the middle overs. The South African blazed his way to 42 off just 25 deliveries before getting caught at long-off, courtesy of a stunning catch by Kamindu Mendis.

Brevis left the team in a pretty good position at 114 for 4 in 12.5 overs. Seven overs were left in the innings but CSK couldn’t finish off well. The team needed Shivam Dube (12 off 9) and MS Dhoni (6 off 10) to build a similar partnership that they stitched against LSG but the duo failed to do so

From 114 for 4, Chennai Super Kings were bundled out for 154, falling 15-20 runs short of what could have been a decent first innings score on this pitch.

2. SRH’s middle order finally comes to the party

Runs seem to elude Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head at the moment. Once again, the duo got out cheaply but the middle-order stepped up this time around. Ishan Kishan walked off without getting out in the last game but made amends today.

With his team tottering at 54 for 3, Ishan Kishan held the innings together wonderfully and played with the right approach. The southpaw played on the merit of the ball and didn’t try to force a shot. He played a valuable knock of 44 off 34 before getting holed out at deep mid-wicket by Sam Curran.

Ishan Kishan’s wicket, once again, brought CSK back into the game but Nitish Kumar Reddy and Kamindu Mendis ensured they stayed till the end and guided the team home. Reddy batted at number 7 today and that worked well for his cause. He found some form with an unbeaten knock of 19 off 13 balls, while Kamindu Mendis remained unbeaten on 32 off 22 deliveries.

2. Kamindu Mendis steals limelight with all-round performance

SRH’s decision to play Kamindu Mendis worked wonders for the team as he contributed in all three facets of the game. Making his debut for CSK in IPL 2025, Dewald Brevis hit four sixes on his way to 42 off 25. He would have hit the fifth six had Mendis not taken a blinder at long-off, with some calling it the catch of the tournament.

That was, perhaps, one of the biggest turning points in the game as Brevis was taking the game away from SRH at that stage. Mendis bowled three overs and picked the crucial wicket of Ravindra Jadeja while giving away just 21 runs.

Later, he soaked in all the pressure with the bat in a tense run-chase and played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 32 off 22 balls. His unbeaten 49-run sixth-wicket partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy helped his team chase down the target in 18.4 overs.
