Mumbai Indians clinched their second consecutive win in IPL 2025 after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by five wickets on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Two back-to-back wins also mean that Hardik Pandya and Co. have six points in their kitty and their campaign is back on track. On the other hand, it has been a forgettable season for SRH, so far. Despite registering a remarkable win in their last game, SRH couldn’t carry on the winning momentum as they delivered another shambolic performance with the bat.

Mumbai Indians were right on the money with the ball, not giving anything away in the powerplay. The openers struggled to get going and SRH ended up scoring 162 for 5 at the end of the first innings. In response, Mumbai Indians chased down the score in 18.1 overs.

In this article, let’s take a look at three major talking points from the game:

  1. Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah keep SRH’s opening duo silent in powerplay

Deepak Chahar found swing in the first two overs of the innings and made good use of that. Abhishek Sharma found it hard to get his timing right and would have departed on the first ball of the innings had Will Jacks not dropped his catch. Chahar hit the good lengths consistently and often bowled the bouncers to good effect. On a slow wicket, Abhishek Sharma found it difficult to time the ball well but somehow managed to get boundaries.

Deepak Chahar was a bit unlucky as both Head and Abhishek Sharma’s catches were dropped in his first over. Jasprit Bumrah was brought on early in the fourth over and he piled up pressure on SRH openers, further. His first two overs went for just 10 runs as SRH huffed and puffed to 46 for no loss at the end of the first six overs.

On a wicket, which wasn’t too easy to bat on, MI fast bowlers ensured that SRH didn’t get to a quick start, which helped them pick wickets in a cluster in the middle overs.

2. SRH’s middle order denies taking responsibility

After witnessing their batting heroics in their first game, many felt that SRH could become the first team to score 300 in an innings, this season. However, their middle order has struggled badly, since. Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s poor form is one of the biggest reasons behind their downfall. Heinrich Klaasen got going a few times but failed to convert those starts and a similar incident happened today.

Against his former franchise, Ishan Kishan got out for just 2 runs. Nitish Reddy rarely got anything in the middle, amassing 19 off 21, while Klaasen looked good for his 37 off 28. Nevertheless, a late flourish helped them reach 160-mark in the end but it didn’t prove enough.

3. Will Jacks’ all-round performance serve as a big positive for MI

Prior to this game, Jacks had failed to make an impact with the bat. Given the wicket was quite slow, Hardik called him to bowl right after the powerplay. The Englishman found purchase from the wicket right away and Ishan Kishan and Head fell prey to him.

In a bid to launch him for a six, Ishan Kishan stepped down but couldn’t get to the pitch of the ball. The ball was pitched outside the off-stump and the turn took it further away from Kishan’s arc. He was stumped on the third delivery of the innings. In his next over, Jack induced a false shot from Travis Head (28 off 29), who struggled throughout his innings.

Will Jacks’ outstanding spell of 2 for 14 in three overs led to SRH slipping from 53/0 in seven overs to 83/3 in 12 overs. Later, Will Jacks played a vital knock of 36 off 26 balls, helping him earn the Player of the Match award.
