Gujarat Titans’ four-match winning streak came to an end as Lucknow Super Giants picked up a comprehensive win over the visitors in Saturday’s afternoon game of the 2025 Indian Premier League. Rishabh Pant won the toss and invited Gujarat Titans to bat first. Their opening duo struck big runs once again, however, the innings faltered in the second half, and ended up managing 180 on the board.

That target proved to be a bit tricky towards the end, as the game went down to the last over, but Lucknow Super Giants always had it under control. Nicholas Pooran scored some quick runs once again, and so did Aiden Markram as the hosts chased down the target with three balls to spare.

Here are three important talking points from the game:

1. The Gill - Sai Sudharsan camaraderie

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudhasan have formed a lethal opening pair now in the IPL. In 24 innings, they have a 50+ partnership in half of them, as well as four stands of more than a century. The consistency with which both these retained Gujarat Titans players have been able to perform has been remarkable.

Both Gill and Sai Sudharsan got fifties today, scoring at a respectable strike rate of more than 150. The duo creates a good left-right conundrum amongst bowlers and looks at ease against pace and spin. Gujarat’s strategy has been for one of their top three to bat big this season, and both Gill and Sai Sudharsan are performing their roles to perfection.

Had they got a bit more impetus from their middle order, Gujarat could have easily crossed 200 in this game and finished with a more challenging target. In the match against LSG on Saturday, Gill and Sai Sudharsan put on a 120-run partnership for the opening wicket.

2. Lucknow’s impressive death-bowling

Gujarat could manage only 60 runs in the final eight overs of their innings, as they went from being 120/0 to 180/6. Shardul Thakur was amongst the wickets once again, striking with a couple of full tosses. Digvesh Rathi had another impressive day at the office, as he finished with 1/30 in his 4 overs.

The dangerous middle order of Gujarat which included Jos Buttler, Sherfane Rutherford, Shahrukh Khan, and Rahul Tewatia were made to look subpar as LSG crawled back into the contest after conceding too many runs in the first 12 overs. It was a return to form for Ravi Bishnoi as well, who picked up two crucial wickets today in the middle overs. The middle and death-over revival helped LSG chase an under-par target on this wicket.

3. Nicholas Pooran in the form of his life

87*, 12, 44, 70, 75 - these were Nicholas Pooran’s scores in the last five games before today in IPL 2025. He has been in mind-boggling form this season, proving his worth each game for Lucknow Super Giants.

Today, he added an impressive 64 off just 34 balls to that list. Nicholas Pooran has been lethal against the spinners, and brutal versus the pacers. He has scored runs on sluggish tracks and belted the bowlers on flat decks. The southpaw has been a high-value pick in the IPL for plenty of seasons, but this year he is coming into his own in the tournament. Pooran has delivered such performances in the Caribbean Premier League and the Major League Cricket and is now translating that in the IPL. He couldn’t quite finish the game tonight but did enough to allow the hosts a victory in the end.
