While there still remained a semblance of control for Lucknow Super Giants during the first innings, their hopes of securing two crucial points were dashed once Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah took charge during the chase. Bumrah picked up 4 for 22, while Boult claimed 3 for 20, as the home team secured a 54-run victory in the MI vs LSG IPL 2025 match. The commanding win propelled the five-time champions to the second spot on the IPL 2025 points table, behind only Gujarat Titans.

Lucknow Super Giants relied on Mitchell Marsh to see the chase through after losing their trusted batters, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran, early in the innings. The story remained disappointingly similar for their skipper Rishabh Pant, who returned to the dugout after hitting a four. While Marsh tried to steady the innings, Boult removed both Marsh and Badoni in quick succession to seal the deal for MI. Meanwhile, Bumrah picked up three wickets in the 16th over to cut short the visitors' fight at Wankhede. Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians charged to an above-par total on the back of half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav.

Winning the toss, Rishabh Pant announced the return of Mayank Yadav to the league as the seamer replaced Shardul Thakur in the LSG Playing XI. The pacer marked an early impact, dismissing Rohit Sharma in the third over of the powerplay after the MI opener had hit two sixes. However, the early setback didn't hold back the home team as Ryan Rickelton continued his assault.

The opener bashed the LSG spinners Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi before Rathi returned to get rid of him at 59 off 32. Despite the strike, LSG's chance to stage a comeback in the game was further halted by Suryakumar Yadav. Even when Prince Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Will Jacks and Tilak Varma cheaply, SKY kept the runs coming, completing his 4000 runs in IPL.

As the innings neared its close, MI's momentum dipped briefly when Mayank Yadav bowled Hardik Pandya. But Naman Dhir provided a timely lift, striking back-to-back boundaries off Prince Yadav. Suryakumar notched up a 27-ball half-century with his fourth six but departed immediately after against Avesh Khan. Corbin Bosch, stepping in for the injured Mitchell Santner, chipped in with a six and a four off Rathi, while Dhir’s unbeaten 25 off 11, adorned with a final-ball six, lifted MI to a dominating 215.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled a composed opening over in the chase before dismissing Aiden Markram at just 9 off 11 in his second over. Mitchell Marsh tried to counterattack with a six each off Deepak Chahar and Bumrah, but LSG limped to just 40 in the first five overs. Nicholas Pooran then shifted gears, smashing Chahar for a pair of sixes to push LSG to 60/1 by the end of the powerplay. However, the momentum quickly swung back in the home side's way. Swiftly after the powerplay, Will Jacks removed Pooran before the star batter could overturn LSG's fate. Jacks struck again two balls later, dismissing Rishabh Pant, who has struggled throughout IPL 2025. 

Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah ensure a big margin of victory with lethal spells at Wankhede

Mitchell Marsh tried to rebuild by taking on Hardik Pandya, while Ayush Badoni launched a counterattack against Karn Sharma with two sixes and a four in a single over. But just as LSG sensed a comeback, Hardik called Trent Boult into the attack. Lucknow's last hope, Marsh walked off to Boult at 34 off 24 in the 12th over before returning in the 15th over to remove Ayush Badoni. Any chances of a fight was then curbed by Jasprit Bumrah.

With the game slipping away, the final overs became about MI trying to boost their Net Run Rate. Bumrah returned to claim David Miller, then bowled Abdul Samad and Avesh Khan off successive deliveries in the same over as LSG fell from 135 off 5 to 142 off 8 in no time. Trent Boult then bundled out LSG at 161 in the last over as he dashed the stumps behind Digvesh Rathi. While Mumbai Indians charged to the second spot on the IPL 2025 points table with 12 points, LSG stayed put at the sixth spot with just 10 points in as many matches.
