SRH vs MI

Three talking points from the SRH vs MI IPL 2025 match

To write off a team in the middle of the league stage, one must be sure it isn’t a five-time champion. From being perceived as destined to repeat failures of recent seasons to breaking into the top four, Mumbai Indians have scripted one of the most epic comebacks in IPL history. Driven by a fiery bowling attack and the resurgence of Rohit Sharma, MI defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets in their own backyard to register a fourth consecutive win. The emphatic victory in the SRH vs MI IPL 2025 clash has propelled the former champions into the top four of the points table. From being buried deep in the standings early on to rising when the competition has truly heated up, MI have now positioned themselves as serious contenders for this season’s title.

Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar demolish SRH batting order in the powerplay itself

Mumbai Indians appear to have rediscovered their rhythm. The five-time champions are now riding a four-match winning streak, bouncing back from a sluggish start to break into the top four. Their latest victory came in commanding fashion at the home ground of last season’s runners-up, Sunrisers Hyderabad, who continue to falter with the bat. Heinrich Klaasen fought a lone battle with a well-compiled 71 off 44 balls, but his efforts couldn’t lift SRH past 143/8, a total that MI overhauled with ease, thanks to a composed 70 off 46 from Rohit Sharma. This was SRH’s third defeat at home this season.

The hopes of the IPL fans to witness a thriller were dashed early into the SRH vs MI IPL 2025 match. In Hyderabad, Hardik Pandya handed the opportunity for SRH to bat first after winning the toss. However, a ghost of their IPL 2024 selves who bashed the opponents at the onset itself, SRH could not bank on the conditions. The batting lineup succumbed in the powerplay itself as Mumbai Indians reduced the home team to 35/5. The top-order lacked the temperament to handle quality swing bowling from Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult, collapsing to 24/4 in six overs, their worst start this season.

The hosts had a disastrous beginning with Travis Head departing for a duck in the second over, undone by Trent Boult. Abhishek Sharma briefly settled nerves with a six but the stay was far from settled. In a bizarre moment, Ishan Kishan walked off after believing he edged one down the leg side, although replays showed there was no contact. Hardik Pandya acknowledged Kishan's honesty with a pat, but SRH’s top order kept crumbling. Abhishek Sharma gifted his wicket to Boult in the following over, misreading a knuckle ball, and Nitish Reddy continued his lean patch as Deepak Chahr removed the all-rounder.

With SRH reeling at 24/4, Chahar completed his spell immediately after the powerplay, returning outstanding figures of 2 for 12. Mitchell Santner kept things tight and Hardik Pandya struck to remove Aniket Verma, pushing SRH deeper into trouble at 35/5. Things could have turned worse but the move to call in the impact sub in the first innings favored SRH.

Heinrich Klaasen, Abhinav Manohar forge a stable partnership to sail the home team in the SRH vs MI IPL 2025 match

Abhinav Manohar came in as an Impact Sub and forged a 99-run stand with Heinrich Klaasen, sparing SRH from an embarrassing total. Klaasen broke the shackles with some clean hitting against Vignesh Puthur and Pandya. Klaasen reached his half-century in 34 balls and looked to pace up the innings in the death overs. The South African batter and Abhinav Manohar picked up boundaries against Jasprit Bumrah and Pandya, but Bumrah turned the tide with a clinical 19th over. Though Klaasen smashed a six, Bumrah had the final say, dismissing him off the last ball. Boult returned to bowl the last over and added two more wickets to his tally, restricting SRH to a below-par 143/8.

Rohit Sharma continues his rich vein of form as MI break into the top four of the IPL 2025 points table

In a season where the fans witnessed PBKS defending 111, the Hyderabad crowd still believed. But SRH bowlers let things loose early. Without the option of introducing Mohammed Shami as an Impact Player, Pat Cummins opened the attack but failed to impose any impact, unlike Boult and Chahar. In contrast to SRH, MI’s openers made more than double of Hyderabad's numbers during their powerplay, setting up a comfortable chase. It was MI's day but not the day of Ryan Rickelton who walked off to Jaydev Unadkat. However, like CSK, SRH was fated to sustain the defeat at the hands of the resurgent Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, looking in vintage form, took the attack to both Cummins and Unadkat, scoring freely. Will Jacks matches the rhythm as the duo undid the chase swiftly. The half-century by Rohit Sharma marked the first instance of the former MI captain to hit consecutive fifties in the IPL in 9 years. Though Zeeshan Ansari removed Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav stepped in and kept the runs flowing. SRH struggled to break partnerships, and by the time Rohit was dismissed for 70, MI needed only 14 more. Suryakumar wrapped things up in the 16th over with a couple of boundaries off Ansari, sealing a dominant win for Mumbai.

Lined up next is the CSK vs SRH IPL 2025 match, do-or-die fixture for both the teams, placed at the bottom of the points table. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians will aim to extend their winning streak to five matches when they host Lucknow Super Giants home for the MI vs LSG encounter at home on Sunday.
