It was a lucky crowd that turned up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi for the DC vs RR clash. The spectators became the first to witness a Super Over in the ongoing season as Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals battled in a nail-biting contest. Despite a strong push in the chase, RR faltered in the face of a Mitchell Starc masterclass. Operating on the finest of margins, Starc first dragged the match into a Super Over before sealing it for his team. With this win, Delhi Capitals finally secured a victory at home, having suffered their first loss of the season against Mumbai Indians at the same venue. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, will rue several missed opportunities, none more painful than failing to score 2 runs off the final ball before the Super Over dashed their hopes of a win.

A sublime finish for DC, courtesy of Tristan Stubbs and Axar Patel

The Rajasthan Royals spinners made sure that the runs dry up in the middle for DC despite a 50-run stand between KL Rahul and Abishek Porel. Jake Fraser McGurk departed cheaply yet again as Karun Nair failed to emulate his terrific knock from the DC vs MI contest against RR. However, the momentum shifted sharply when Axar Patel unleashed a brutal assault from the 16th over. He smashed Hasaranga all around the park before Stubbs capitalized on an erraruc over from Sandeep Sharma to push DC to 188/5. Sloppy fielding from RR didn’t help, as Theekshana dropped a dolly off the last ball.

Fighting fifties from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana in the chase keep RR in contention

In response to DC's fighting total, Jaiswal and Sanju Samson got RR off to a fiery start, hammering Mukesh and Starc with sixes and boundaries. With the dew setting in, they made the most of the early overs. Samson looked dangerous before a rib injury forced him off the field. Axar introduced himself and soon disrupted RR’s rhythm by dismissing Riyan Parag. Kuldeep Yadav then chipped in with tight bowling, eventually removing the well-set Jaiswal.

However, Rana kept Rajasthan's hopes alive as he registered his third half-century of the season. Alongside Dhruv Jurel, he pushed Royals into contention. Half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana had RR in cruise control during the chase, but a clinical final over by Mitchell Starc forced a tie and brought the match to a thrilling climax.

Mitchell Starc masterclass at the death to force a Super Over and bury the victory hopes of RR

With 31 needed off the final three overs, Mitchell Starc came back with precision yorkers to dismiss Rana and keep Hetmyer quiet. Jurel fought on, reducing the equation to 9 off 6, but Starc held his nerve in the final over to force the tie. Despite conceding 10 runs in the first three deliveries of the Super Over, DC bounced back with two quick run-outs to limit Royals to 11/2. KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs then finished the job in style where Rahul struck a boundary and Stubbs pulled a short one for six to seal the victory. With this, Delhi Capitals moved to the top of the IPL 2025 table, becoming the first team to reach 10 points with five wins in six matches. It was Starc’s 20th over masterclass, defending nine runs, that set up the dramatic finish.
