New Zealand’s veteran fast bowler, Tim Southee has made his way into the record books and it’s not because of his bowling. Southee has now surpassed legendary Indian batter Virender Sehwag for the most sixes in Test cricket. Sehwag played 103 Tests in his international career and scored 8586 runs at an average of close to 50. Known for destructive hitting, he hit 91 sixes in the longest format. Meanwhile, Tim Southee surpassed his tally of sixes on day 3 of the ongoing first Test match between India and New Zealand.
Coming in at number nine, Southee played a blistering knock of 65 runs in 73 balls. He hit five fours and as many as four sixes during his enterprising knock. Prior to the start of his knock, he had 89 sixes to his name. He managed to strike four more sixes and surpassed Virender Sehwag’s tally of maximums.
Meanwhile, Ben Stokes, currently, holds the record for scoring the most sixes in Test cricket. He has 131 sixes to his name, followed by Brendon McCullum with 107 maximums. Australian legendary wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist hit 100 sixes in his Test cricket career and currently sits third on the list. Chris Gayle is at fourth with 98 sixes, while Jacques Kallis is at five with 97 sixes.
New Zealand scores 402 in response to India’s 46 all-out
As India were trying to pick quick wickets on day 3, Southee joined hands with Rachin Ravindra and helped New Zealand take the total past the 400-run mark. The duo mixed caution with aggression and stitched a 137-run partnership for the eighth wicket.
Rachin Ravindra’s love affair with India continues to prosper as he notched his second Test century. The southpaw played a sensational knock of 134 runs in 157 deliveries, including 13 fours and five sixes. As for India’s bowling, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets each.
India are currently batting in the third innings and have a big task at hand. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the team a steady start. The duo put on a 72-run partnership for the opening wicket before Jaiswal got out stumped off Ajaz Patel.
Rohit Sharma played a beautiful knock of 52 runs but was unlucky to have the ball chopped onto his stumps. At the time of writing, India have managed to score 134 runs for the loss of two wickets, trailing by 222 runs. Virat Kohli (21) and Sarfaraz Khan (24) are currently their at the crease, leading India’s fightback.
