Updated South Africa squad announced for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
South Africa has made a significant change to their squad ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch being added to their 15-member lineup as a replacement for the injured Anrich Nortje. Bosch, 30, made his ODI debut against Pakistan in December, where he recorded figures of 1/69 in nine overs. Despite the modest debut, Bosch has shown promise and played an instrumental role for MI Cape Town in the recently concluded SA20 2025. His impressive performances with the ball helped the Rashid Khan-led team clinch the title, showcasing his ability to step up in high-pressure situations.
In addition to Bosch’s inclusion, fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been named as a travelling reserve for the tournament. Maphaka’s addition brings depth to South Africa's bowling resources, as the team gears up for the prestigious Champions Trophy. South Africa will now look to Bosch to bring valuable all-round skills to the table in the absence of Nortje, who has been a key part of the team’s bowling attack. Bosch's recent form and versatility will be crucial for the Proteas as they aim to make a strong push for the trophy.
South Africa has been grappling with injury concerns to several of their key seamers ahead of the Champions Trophy. Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out due to a groin issue, while Beuran Hendricks and Lizaad Williams are also recovering from injuries. To address these gaps, Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka, along with opener Tony de Zorzi, are set to depart for Karachi on Sunday, February 9. They will join the South African squad for the remainder of the tri-nation ODI series against Pakistan and New Zealand, hoping to add strength to the team’s bowling resources.
In a bid to further enhance their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy, South Africa has brought in former Pakistan all-rounder Yasir Arafat as a consultant. Arafat will assist the team for both the ongoing tri-nation series and the much-anticipated Champions Trophy. The Proteas are placed in Group B of the Champions Trophy, alongside formidable teams such as Australia, England, and Afghanistan. South Africa’s campaign begins on February 21, when they take on Afghanistan in Karachi. With a squad facing injury concerns, the team's preparations will rely heavily on the added experience and depth brought by Bosch, Maphaka, and the guidance of Arafat.
Temba Bavuma and the South African team will next head to Rawalpindi to face Australia on February 25, as part of their group-stage fixtures in the Champions Trophy. Their group-stage campaign will wrap up with a crucial match against England in Karachi on March 1. South Africa’s recent tournament performances have been bittersweet; they were heartbreakingly defeated in the T20 World Cup final last year and fell to Australia in the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite these setbacks, the Proteas are determined to put the disappointments behind them and aim for a strong showing in the Champions Trophy. With a talented squad and a competitive group to face, South Africa will look to turn their recent near-misses into a breakthrough victory in this prestigious tournament.
