In a massive breaking news development, star Indian batter Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. The legendary Indian cricketer came up with a heartfelt message on the social media while signing off from the longest format of the game. Earlier this week, Kohli had reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his intentions to retire from Test cricket, however, many of the senior officials tried their best to convince him to reconsider the decision ahead of the important India vs England five-match Test series. Moreover, just a few days back, another legendary figure in Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma, announced his retirement from Test cricket through a social media story.

Virat Kohli retirement from Test matches stirs the cricket fraternity

The illustrious Test cricket career that began on June 20, 2011, took giant strides early on before evolving into a legendary journey โ€” now comes to a tragic end on May 12, 2025. After some impressive performances in the white-ball formats, Virat Kohli got an opportunity to live his dream of playing Test cricket for India against West Indies in 2011. The right-handed modern-day master never really looked behind from then, as he went on to score tons of runs, notching up centuries just for fun during his peak moments.

However, the greatest chapters in the history of Indian cricket began when Virat Kohli was appointed India Test captain full-fledgedly in 2015 following MS Dhoni calling it a day from the longest format of the game. Under Kohli's leadership, India managed to win as many as 40 matches out of 68 Tests, making him the most successful India captain in Test cricket. On the other hand, Virat also had an impressive captaincy record in SENA countries, with 7 wins, 13 losses, 3 draws from 23 Test matches. The biggest achievement came in 2018-19 when India won the Border Gavaskar Trophy Down Under for the first time under Virat Kohli's captaincy before repeating the feat in 2020-21.

As the India Test captain, Virat Kohli owned some phenomenal records on the batting front as well, notching up a wonderful tally of 5864 runs from as many as 68 matches at an impressive average of 54.80 that includes 20 centuries and 18 fifties. He etched his name at the top of a legendary tally, recording the most runs as a Test captain for India. However, there was still lot of drama when eventually Virat Kohli decided to step down as India's Test captain after the loss to South Africa in 2022.

While talking about the overall Virat Kohli stats in Test cricket so far, the 36-year-old has composed a remarkable tally of 9230 runs from 123 matches at an average of 46.85 that includes 31 half-centuries and 30 hundreds since making his debut in the longer format in 2011. With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their respective retirements from Test cricket, a huge turmoil has been created as far as Indian batting line-up is considered ahead of the England tour.
