Rahul Dravid, a stalwart of cricket, has experienced a career marked by near misses in major tournaments. His tenure as a player and later as a coach has been defined by remarkable achievements interspersed with heartbreaking losses. In the 2002 Champions Trophy, India shared the title with Sri Lanka, but World Cups proved to be his Achilles' heel. In 2003, India faltered in the ODI World Cup final against Australia, setting the stage for a series of disappointments. Despite his esteemed career, Dravid couldn't replicate his teammate Sachin Tendulkar's 2011 World Cup triumph, having retired from international cricket the year before. Even in the IPL, where he continued to compete, elusive success remained out of reach. Transitioning to coaching, Dravid found his stride with the U19 Indian team, guiding them to significant victories. However, his transition to coaching the senior squad was met with mixed results.
Under his stewardship, India showed promise in the 2022 T20 World Cup, reaching the semi-finals but falling short against England. Hopes were high in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India was favored to win, only to face heartbreak once more, losing to Australia in the final. The ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup marks Dravid's final tournament as head coach of the Indian senior team, as he prepares to step aside.
Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag has expressed a heartfelt wish for the current Indian team to clinch a major trophy in honor of Rahul Dravid, whom he regards as one of India's finest talents. Sehwag emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity under Rohit Sharma's leadership, urging the team to perform admirably and secure a world championship title for Dravid. His sentiments reflect a deep admiration for Dravid's contributions to Indian cricket and a desire to see his legacy crowned with the ultimate achievement in international cricket.
“We played the 2011 World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar. So, this T20 World Cup can be for Rahul Dravid. At least as a coach he gets to win the World Cup and get the badge of being a World Cup winner, which he didn't get as a player," said Virender Sehwag in a recent interview.
India will face England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Guyana. The winner of this crucial match will advance to the final against South Africa, scheduled to take place at Barbados on June 29th.
