After the end of the opening round in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, teams like India, Australia, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, England, West Indies, United States of America (USA) and South Africa have qualified for the Super 8 stage. All of these eight teams have played some exciting cricket both in the batting as well as bowling departments in the first round and will be hoping to continue their respective brilliant forms during the remainder of the T20I competition as well. The first semi-final is scheduled to be held on 27 June, 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad while the second semi-final will be played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. On the other hand, the grand finale will take place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on 29 June, 2024.
Who will win the T20 World Cup 2024?
While looking at the performances in the first round of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, the likes of India, Australia, West Indies and England are being considered as the major contenders to win the prestigious title. Incidentally, out of these four teams, the trio of Australia, India and co-hosts West Indies have come out unbeaten in this Super 8 stage of the tournament. Each of these four sides have already won the T20 World Cup atleast once. Team India were the winners of the inaugural World T20 in 2007 where they defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals. Australia won their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 having beaten New Zealand in the final encounter.
On the other hand, both West Indies and England are the most successful teams in the history of the T20I competition having won as many as two titles each. West Indies won the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2012 where they got the better of Sri Lanka in the finals and they defeated England to win the 2016 World T20 hosted in India. On the other hand, England won the 2010 T20 World Cup where they beat Australia in the final and then got the better of Pakistan to win the 2022 T20 World Cup.
The Indian team has a strong chance to win the T20 World Cup 2024 after their superb performance in the opening round where they defeated the likes of USA, Ireland and Pakistan. They have a really good playing combination consisting of as many as four spinners namely Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, who can prove to be vital in the slow and turning West Indies pitches. India also has the experience of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the batting department while speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been in a sensational form off late.
West Indies cricket team are looking a very dangerous side in this ongoing tournament so far especially after their amazing victories against New Zealand and Afghanistan in the first round. For the two-time champions, left-handed swashbuckling wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran has been in a sensational form as he smashed a blistering knock of 98 runs off just 53 balls that included 8 sixes and 6 fours against Afghanistan. The left-arm spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie have also performed really well.
Australia Cricket team are posing a definite challenge against all the teams as they are confident to win their third ICC tournament on the trot after fabulous victories in the 2023 World Test Championship and ODI World Cup in India. The 2021 champions have a quite balanced side with the opening duo of Travis Head and David Warner are doing well at the top while seam bowling all-rounder Marcus Stoinis having notched up a couple of half-centuries.
Despite losing the group stage clash against Australia, England definitely has the ability to win their third T20 World Cup title after 2010 and 2022. The defending champions have some power-hitting batters like skipper Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook alongside the express pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood.
