After playing their first final of an ICC event against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the South African team are ready to take their good form forward in the ICC World Test Championship. The Proteas team are on the tour of West Indies, where they will be seen playing 2 Tests and 3 T20Is from July 31st to August 27, 2024. It will be the first tour for the South African team after performing well in the Marquee event, where they emerged as runners-up by getting defeated by the Indian team in the finals.
In the first Test Match of the series on day 2 at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, the Proteas team managed to reach a total of 344 runs with the help of crucial knocks by Captain Temba Bavuma and opener Tony de Zorzi, who scored 86 and 78 runs respectively.
After winning the toss, South Africa opted to bat first at Queens Park in Trinidad, having young players in the squad like Tristan Stubbs, Mulder, Rickelton and David Bedingham, who is playing his debut test match. However, they didn’t get a great start as they lost the first wicket on the score of 43 runs of Aiden Markam. Later, the young Tristan Stubbs and Zorzi tried to fight back and form a partnership but could not take it forward from the score of 86 runs against the Carribean pace attack of Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales.
However, Zorzai and Bavuma formed a crucial partnership of 51 runs for the 3rd wicket and handled the pressure after the back-to-back fall of 2 wickets. After the fall of Zorzai’s wicket, captain Bavuma stood at the crease and formed some small crucial partnership with middle-order batters Ryan Rickelton and David Bendigahm, who was playing his debut match.
At the end of day 2, South Africa scored 344 runs in 223 overs, with Wiaan Mulder and Kagiso Rabada batting at the crease on the score of 37 and 12 runs, respectively. West Indies Kemar Roach and Jomel Warrican took 2-3 wickets while Jayden Seals got 2 wickets along with 1 wicket of Jason Holder.
