There had been widespread speculation regarding the future of India’s captain Rohit Sharma, with many suggesting that the 2025 Champions Trophy could mark the end of his ODI career. However, after leading India to their third Champions Trophy title with a commanding four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final at Dubai International Stadium on March 9, Rohit firmly put those retirement rumors to rest. Addressing the media after the win, Rohit expressed his clear intent to continue playing in the 50-over format, reaffirming his commitment to the team and the game. He emphasized that he had no intention of stepping away from international cricket anytime soon and urged the media to put an end to the unfounded speculation.

Rohit Sharma to play the ODI World Cup 2027?

Rohit’s leadership has been instrumental in India’s success, and his victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy only added to his legacy as one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history. With a calm and composed demeanor, he guided India to a memorable triumph, but his message post-victory was unequivocal—he was not going anywhere. Rohit's refusal to entertain the retirement talks signals his continued passion for the game and his desire to contribute to India’s cricketing future for the years to come.

Although Rohit Sharma has confirmed that he intends to continue playing in ODI cricket, he was less definitive when it came to his long-term plans, especially regarding the 2027 ODI World Cup. The India captain, who led his team to a remarkable third Champions Trophy title in 2025, clarified that he was not currently focused on events as far ahead as the next World Cup. He stated that he was living in the present and would make decisions about his future closer to the time. This response has left his potential involvement in the 2027 World Cup open to speculation, as Rohit chose to avoid committing to anything beyond his current playing schedule.

Rohit's pragmatic approach to his career trajectory, where he chooses to focus on the here and now, rather than making long-term predictions, suggests that he remains fully invested in the current phase of his cricketing journey. By emphasizing his commitment to the present, the 2025 Champions Trophy win is his immediate priority. It is clear, however, that Rohit is not ruling out playing in future global tournaments, but his decision will be based on his form, fitness, and circumstances closer to the time. For now, his future with the Indian cricket team remains in the hands of his evolving performances and the team’s needs.

"Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn’t be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don’t want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won’t play in the 2027 World Cup. There’s no point in making such statements right now. Realistically, I have always taken my career one step at a time. I don’t like thinking too far into the future, and I haven’t done so in the past either. For now, I am enjoying my cricket and the time I spend with this team. I hope my teammates enjoy my presence as well. That’s all that matters at this point,” said Indian captain Rohit Sharma in a recent interview.

Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, delivering a superb 76 off 83 balls, which included seven boundaries and three sixes. His knock set the tone for India’s chase of 252 runs, as he and Shubman Gill put together a solid 105-run opening partnership off 112 balls. This early foundation gave India the ideal start in their pursuit of a challenging target. Following Gill's dismissal, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel steadied the ship with a crucial 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket, ensuring the team remained on track.

However, the chase became a bit tricky after their dismissals, but KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja kept their composure and guided India home. The target was achieved in 49 overs, securing India’s second consecutive ICC title after their T20 World Cup triumph in 2024. Rohit’s fiery knock, coupled with vital contributions from the middle order, helped India successfully chase down the target and clinch the 2025 Champions Trophy, marking yet another milestone in India’s cricketing journey.
