Robin Uthappa recently drew a comparison between emerging Indian cricketers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal and the legendary opening duo of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Uthappa highlighted that Ganguly and Tendulkar, who remain the most successful opening pair in ODI cricket history, accumulated a remarkable 6,609 runs together from 136 innings. Their partnership was characterized by an impressive average of 49.32, including 21 century stands and 23 half-century partnerships. Although Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have not yet opened together in One Day Internationals, with Jaiswal having only played in Tests and T20Is so far, their performance in the T20 format has been notable. In just 10 innings, they have already secured two half-century stands and two century partnerships, showcasing their potential and chemistry at the crease.
Are Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal the next Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly?
Uthappa, who shared the field with Ganguly and Tendulkar during his international career, observed that Gill and Jaiswal exhibit a complementary style of play reminiscent of the iconic pair. This synergy, combined with their early successes, suggests that they could develop into a formidable opening duo in the future, potentially mirroring the achievements and impact of their esteemed predecessors.
“I do see them, when I look at them they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out together, where their games kind of complimented each other. Their strategies complimented each other, that’s what I see when I see these two go out to bat together,” said former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa on Sony Sports Network.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has thus far played nine Tests and 23 T20Is, amassing 1,028 runs in Tests and 723 runs in T20Is. His performances have been impressive, with a batting average of 68.53 in Tests and 36.15 in T20Is. In his international career, the Mumbai batter has recorded four centuries and nine half-centuries across these formats.
Robin Uthappa is confident that Yashasvi will secure a spot in the ODI team once he gets the opportunity. Uthappa believes that Jaiswal’s skills and playing style will translate effectively to One Day Internationals. According to Uthappa, Jaiswal’s ability to adapt and perform under different conditions will make it easier for him to score runs in the 50-over format. His strong track record in Tests and T20Is suggests that he has the potential to excel in ODIs as well, showcasing his versatility and talent across various formats.
“I honestly feel when he (Jaiswal) gets that opportunity in ODI cricket, he will seal that spot so quickly because after Test cricket and T20I cricket, ODI cricket is going to be so much easier for him. Because he will feel like I have all the time in the world to be able to score runs,” Uthappa concluded.
