During a recent BCCI review meeting in Mumbai, one of the key topics was the future of India's captaincy in Test and ODI cricket. Despite criticism of his leadership following a disappointing personal performance in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma reportedly informed the selectors that he would continue as captain until a successor is chosen. However, a new report suggests that while coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee have already identified a potential replacement for Rohit, they are in disagreement about who that should be. Interestingly, Gambhir sees the next leader in the young opening batter, Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Yashasvi Jaiswal or Rishabh Pant: Frontrunners to succeed Rohit Sharma as India's Test captain
According to reports, Rohit Sharma has reassured the selectors that he will remain in charge until the board decides on his successor. Although his recent form raised concerns among the selectors, he assured that he would fully support his successor when the time comes. It was decided that he would continue to lead the Indian team in ODIs during the Champions Trophy, with any future decisions to be made after the tournament.
Further reports have revealed that discussions around Jasprit Bumrah potentially replacing Rohit as captain were taking place, particularly concerning Bumrah's workload management. The need for a strong vice-captain was highlighted as crucial for managing his role. While some selectors have backed Rishabh Pant for the Test captaincy, Gautam Gambhir has voiced his support for Yashasvi Jaiswal. Pant, who has experience captaining the Delhi team in domestic cricket, also led India in the 2022 T20I series against South Africa when KL Rahul was injured.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, who took over India's T20I captaincy last year, is not considered a serious candidate for the ODI captaincy, as he still needs to secure his place in the format. With India unlikely to appoint separate captains for each format, the report suggests that Bumrah is the front-runner for both the Test and ODI roles, provided the selectors appoint a strong vice-captain to manage the team during his rest periods. However, his crucial workload management plays a sour factor in the ace seamer claiming the leading position in the camp.
