Yuzvendra Chahal speaks about his County cricket stint

Star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has faced a challenging period since the World Cup, as he was unable to secure a spot in the T20I team and was not selected for the recently concluded Duleep Trophy. In response to this setback, Chahal opted to play for Northamptonshire in County Cricket Division II, where he made a significant impact by taking 19 wickets in just four matches. His performance included a standout five-wicket haul against Kent, showcasing his skills and determination. Chahal has expressed that his decision to participate in county cricket was driven by a desire to prove himself and fight for a place in the Indian Test team. With formidable competitors like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav already in the mix, breaking into the Test squad has been challenging for him. However, Chahal remains committed to staying in contention for the upcoming series against England, set to begin in June 2025.

His successful stint in county cricket not only demonstrates his resilience but also reflects his ambition to regain his place among India’s elite spin bowlers. “County cricket is tough cricket. It gave me an opportunity to showcase my skills against a very good standard of cricket. With India touring England next year, I wanted to show how good I am," leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal told The Times of India.

Chahal expressed his gratitude to the Rajasthan Royals coaching staff for introducing him to promising young talent Krish Patel, who is just 18 years old. He emphasized the importance of mentorship and support in his journey, highlighting how working with younger players inspires him to elevate his own game. Chahal is excited about the potential of the next generation and values the opportunity to share his experience with up-and-coming cricketers like Patel.

Additionally, he thanked Brindon McCullum, who played a crucial role in giving him a break in the County Championship. Chahal recognized the impact that supportive coaches can have on a player's career, noting how McCullum's belief in him allowed him to showcase his skills on a larger stage. “Firstly, I am very grateful to Brindon sir who gave me an opportunity to play in County cricket, and then the Rajasthan Royal's coaches introduced me to Krish Patel, a highly-educated 18-year old cricketer who is thought to have a very bright future in the game. I want to see him play internationally and if I can help, I am always there,” Chahal added.
