La Liga clubs Girona and Real Sociedad are interested in signing Barcelona’s Eric Garcia, according to several reports. For the unversed, Garcia joined the Catalan Giants from Manchester City as a free agent in 2021 and has been with them since then. Prior to that, he spent four years with the Premier League Champions. In September 2023, Girona secured Garcia’s services on loan from Barcelona and the centre-back did well to score five goals in 31 appearances for them.
He also helped Girona qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s 94-year-old history. Girona finished at the third place in the season with 81 points, only behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. But the Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has used him very sparingly this season playing for just 44 minutes on an average per game. Garcia has started in only four games this season out of possible 18 and it seems the player should sign with a different team for more game time.
Why are Girona interested in re-signing Garcia?
According to Relevo (via Tribal Football), Girona are interested in re-signing the Spanish player to bolster their defence line. The club is struggling this season after doing well in the previous one. After 17 matches in La Liga this season, Girona is in 10th place with just 22 points. Even in the UEFA Champions League, they have managed just one win in six outings and are in 30th position.
Meanwhile, in another report, Real Sociedad are also interested in signing the 23-year-old player. They are in seventh place currently in La Liga and are looking forward to climbing in the points table. However, if Releva is to be believed, Girona is leading the race to sign the Spaniard in the transfer window in January 2025.
As for Eric Garcia, he hasn’t scored a goal this season in 12 appearances across competitions for Barcelona. He has played a total of 80 matches for the club and it remains to be seen if he will end his association after being with them since the 2021-22 season.
