FC Goa defender Sandesh Jhingan recently shared his insights on the issue of age fraud in football, emphasizing the significant challenges it poses for young players. He described how this problem can severely damage a player's confidence, leading to self-doubt during crucial stages of their development. During the inaugural Stay Your Age U-15 football tournament, held from September 12 to 18 in Navi Mumbai, Jhingan recounted personal experiences that illuminated the detrimental effects of facing overage players. He expressed concern that such mismatches can undermine the growth of youth players, who may struggle to compete against opponents who are not only physically larger but also more experienced. This disparity can create an environment where young talents feel inadequate, hindering their ability to develop both technically and mentally.

Jhingan's reflections highlight the need for better regulations and monitoring within youth football to ensure fair competition. He believes that creating a level playing field is essential for fostering confidence and skill development among aspiring players. By addressing the issue of age fraud, the football community can better support young talents and help them reach their full potential, ultimately contributing to the overall growth of the sport in the country. Jhingan's advocacy for transparency and integrity in youth competitions underscores the importance of nurturing future stars in a healthy and fair environment.

"This needs to stop. The age fraud thing has been an elephant in the room for so many years. During my younger days, in the U-15 and the U-17 times, we always knew there was someone who was older but playing in our age group. I have many times felt that I was not good enough, because that boy was stronger, faster, and more mature than me, but all of that was only because he was older than me,” Jhingan said.

"At that age, when you are that young, even a difference of two years makes a massive difference in terms of the quality that you produce on the pitch. Luckily, I kept going and believing in myself. It needs to be stopped. It's so sad that it still happens. It's not just in football, but in all sports, all across the world. I think this needs to stop big time. I am really happy that all the clubs and the Reliance Foundation are coming together to solve this problem," he added.

The Stay Your Age Cup featured six teams: RFYC, FC Goa, Bengaluru FC, Dempo SC, FC Madras, and the Mizoram Football Association (MFA). To ensure fairness and transparency, all teams underwent a rigorous document verification process, allowing them access to player documents for a smoother tournament experience. Each team competed in five matches, following a league system format that promoted healthy competition. This structure not only provided players with ample opportunities to showcase their skills but also emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within youth football. By implementing strict verification procedures, the tournament aimed to eliminate age fraud, ensuring that all participants were of the appropriate age for the U-15 category.

The initiative reflects a commitment to fostering a more equitable playing environment, allowing young talents to develop without the challenges posed by overage opponents. The league format encouraged teams to strive for success while promoting teamwork and sportsmanship, laying the foundation for future stars in Indian football. Overall, the Stay Your Age Cup served as a significant step towards creating a fair and supportive platform for young players.
