Fans are all excited as they have witnessed the commencement of Arne Slot’s era with a pre-season victory against Real Betis in Pittsburgh on Friday evening. So far, there are unmistakable indications of hope for an exhilarating season for the Reds under Slot. Even if the Dutchman's revamped Liverpool team was occasionally careless, they demonstrated enough at the beginning of their trip across the United States to give hope for the future in the wake of Jurgen Klopp. Slot supplemented a number of major names, such as Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai, with some backup players after a number of big stars were granted time off due to the summer tournament mania. At times, this showed as we didn't quite witness the free-flowing Liverpool we've been accustomed to.
Szoboszlai and Salah: A Deadly Duo
In the heated first half, most of the threat came from Szoboszlai, who thrived in the space available to him on the right side of the pitch. He not only scored Liverpool's first goal but also the eventual game-winning goal, dashing past the defense, receiving a deft pass from Salah, and finishing deftly to reach the bottom corner.
Otherwise, there were very few opportunities, as the brilliant Bradley provided creativity and originality on the right wing. But the Merseysiders were never able to really capitalize since they lacked a recognized striker in the lineup.
After an hour, Slot unveiled waves of academy assets to give his more well-known names a break before the rapidly approaching season. Though there is still much to be done, the new management may be able to make some progress in this area.
Slot’s Work Cut Out For Him
Even if Liverpool's pursuit of the championship continued just far enough into April of last year and was eventually driven away, Klopp undoubtedly left the team in a strong position. Slot firmly held the reign of Klopp's Liverpool 2.0. The caliber of the youthful talent the club is producing was highlighted by a third-place result and a Carabao Cup victory, which can serve as a springboard.
However, it is certain that Slot will compete against two extremely formidable rivals Manchester City and Arsenal. To overcome Slot's Feyenoord, PSV had an almost flawless Eredivisie campaign, but those are the kinds of expectations he will have to meet in the Premier League. There hasn't been much room for mistakes in England's premier league in recent years, so Slot will have to get off to a quick start if he wants to lead Liverpool into another title fight the following year.
The computer in the fixture has been nice. Six of Liverpool's first seven games are likely to be wins. Manchester United away on September 1st will be an interesting preseason test, but Slot has to be well-positioned and far ahead of the game when Liverpool plays Chelsea and Arsenal back-to-back in the second half of October.
