According to recent reports, Atletico Madrid are all set to raid North London this summer to shore up their defense. The Rojiblancos have set their sights on securing the signatures of Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur. This news has set the cat among the pigeons in Spurs’ hierarchy. It is believed that the Argentinian international has already had a conversation with Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone. In a previous exchange, Romero had also expressed his desire to play elsewhere and potentially hinted at a move to the Spanish top flight. Romero had previously said:

My focus is always on growing and looking for new places to continue developing. La Liga is a league I would love to play in and need to play in because it is the league that I lack [to play in every top division]

On the other hand, they are also looking to secure the signature of Rodrigo Bentancur, who has featured in over 23 games in the English top flight and has been a mainstay in Spurs’ Europa League campaign, with 697 minutes under his belt. The report read:

Atletico Madrid are expressing firm interest in both Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur, triggering deep concern among Spurs’ hierarchy

Rodrigo Bentancur has been a regular starter in Ange Postecoglou’s side, with over 46 games played over two seasons for the club in the English top flight. However, the Uruguayan’s contract is set to expire in 12 months, starting in the summer 2025. While the Spurs hierarchy are in active discussions to extend his contract, Atletico Madrid’s interest has kept them waiting.

What next for Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham Hotspur have struggled in the English Premier League in the ongoing campaign and are currently 16th on the points table, with only one win in their last five games. They have now pinned their hopes on the Europa League, much like Manchester United, as they prepare to face Bodo/Glimt in the semifinals on May 1st. There are also rumors that Ange Postecoglou might leave North London even if Tottenham secures the Europa League trophy.

They will face Liverpool in the 34th gameweek of the English Premier League. A loss to Tottenham Hotspur will crown Liverpool the title winners of the ongoing campaign.
